The first-ride video reviews of the NT1100 all say that the bags will not hold a full-face helmet. It's not just the capacity, it's the shape. They aren't deep enough.
Those helmet guardians aren't going to work in the rain or mist. Park your bike on a foggy night to go to a Giants game, come back three or four hours later, and both the liner and inside of the face shield will be soaked. Those guardians also aren't going to work with a helmet worth stealing, not on the thieves-ridden streets of San Francisco.

So again, what would you do with your helmet if you rode your CB1100 or Z900 in the rain or mist? or to a Giants game on a foggy night? or onto the thieves-ridden streets of San Fransisco? You know stuff that sport bike and naked bike riders deal with all the time?

I usually just clip the D-ring of my helmet to my backpack and walk around museums knocking things over.

The CB1100 has a helmet lock, so I would lock my helmet to it if the weather permitted, and I wasn't in a high-crime area. The Z900 didn't have a helmet lock.
Never took either bike to a Giants game. I would not lock my Arai to the CB1100 in San Francisco.

Helmet?
Seriously, I was just kidding. I hang mine on the bike and haven't had any problems since 1976.

So basically the same as using the helmet guardian, just lock it to the bike, or carry it with you. I probably would not ride my bike to a Bengals/Reds game here in Cincinnati either, too much high volume traffic going and coming or park my bike in a high crime area of the city. Personally, I just avoid those areas in general. according to Honda: "The exhaust muffler, too is set low to maximize saddlebag/pannier volume. And it’s the standard-fit, detachable panniers that are one of the NT1100’s key features. Deliberately designed to be as slim as possible for around-town riding they are just 901mm across at their widest point. Pannier volume is at 33L left and 32L right." Looks like they designed them to be no wider than the handlebars for lane splitting for you Californians. If the bars can get thru, the bags can get thru. To be honest, I have been known to hang my helmet on a mirror or footpeg or just sit it on the ground beside the bike, and sometimes throw my jacket over the tank or tank bag when going into a place to eat. One of the benefits to living in the low crime midwest I guess. We recently spent a week in central Kentucky riding curves and a few of us didn't even bother to lock our bikes in front of the hotel at night. Just took the ignition keys in with us.

- Did you just whack your hands on that guy's mirror? It's about to get worse.
