Simply guessing why their engine makes a funny noise at 2500 OR LESS rpm when they OPEN HER UP TO ACCELERATE. I will never hear that engine nor ever know exactly what they're talking about but it seemed like the description of a struggling engine. Everyone can ride the way they want on their bike. I prefer to avoid pounding the rod bearings with the combination of lower oil pressure and high bearing pressures that you get when accelerating at a low rpm in higher gears.

Your point is well taken, Deanohh -- I understand what you're saying. I just don't think the scenario were talking about is abusive or harmful at all to this motor (accelerating briskly from 2500 rpm in 4th or even 5th gear), and it seemed you were giving that impression to Redreno -- he did respond "Uh...whooops" to your reply so I just wanted to reply that I didn't think that was the case. No big deal, really, was just giving a counterpoint.

Now the same scenario wouldn't be so peachy on my 250 single, for sure, as it's probably making about 8 ft. lb. of torque or less at 2500 rpm. What Redreno is describing, if it is out of the ordinary, would be occurring at other times and rpms too I imagine, but if all is normal, in my opinion I don't believe brisk, or even hard, acceleration from lower rpm (within reason) is the least bit harmful to the big CB.

But, as you say, everyone should ride their own bike as they see fit.

Lol, ok so this is how I discovered the infamous "ticking noise"

Going home from work,
I have the option to go on a nice climb up a hill.
I'll normally be in 4th going 45 mph on a straight
Then as the turn comes up to go up the hill, I let off the throttle to slow down,
Rpms will be around 2.5k and I begin rolling on it to get through the turn and get up to about 55 mph going up.
The noise I hear is simply a clicking noise and the engine sounds fine to me.

Slowing down, I'm not sure how fast I'm going just before the turn, but I definitely don't go under 2k rpms, I shift down just before then whenever I ride.

Not sure I agree there, Deanohh. When I briskly roll the throttle on at 2500 revs in 4th or 5th gear it pulls as strongly as it does at higher rpms; it doesn't feel like the motor is anywhere near to 'lugging.' 1k or 1.5k rpm would be a different story I'm sure.

I only mention it as yesterday I was marvelling at how forcefully and smoothly the bike accelerates from 2.5k rpm in 4th gear.

Indeed the bike will do this but Deanoh is right, don't yank the thing open, roll it on very smoothly and you are good to go. Now is about the time to start talking about BMEP and the dangers of exceeding the maximum, I guess. If anyone is getting these noises under hard or brisk acceleration from low RPM in a high gear, ease off or downshift, that's all.

Speaking of another kind of ticking noise, Mitsuyoshi Kohama, the chief designer of the CB1100 said one of the reasons he chose to give the CB1100 an air-cooled engine is that he "like(s) the metallic sound the engine makes as it cools."

If anyone wants to hear ticking and/or clacking come to my house on hop on my KTM 625 single. Your CB will sound like an electric turbine after getting off of that thing.
