Had a great time, ferret! Thanks for sharing "the loop" with me. I can see why you enjoy riding it so much. Not many people have such an enjoyable ride so close to home. Almost no traffic, only one minor stop light, with roads that meander along ridges, dive down and back up out of creeks, and follow natural contours along watersheds. Ideal CB1100 country, best enjoyed 45-55 mph.

The deer encounter - holy smokes! We're riding along a densely wooded area with overhanging trees. I'm following ferret on his CB1100 on my F800GT. Good thing I was hanging back a bit because suddenly a small doe leaps out of the brush on the right, on a collision course with ferret! From what I saw it looked like the deer realized its mistake and started scrambling and slipping on the pavement, trying to stop when it lost its footing and went down. At that moment, a tiny fawn burst out behind its mother and ran all the way across the highway while the mother retreated back into the woods on the right.

At the next stop sign, I pulled up next to ferret and said, "Did you see that deer back there?" as I was unsure if the deer had been out of his peripheral vision or not. He said, "Yeah! I hit it!" Apparently the deer bumped ferret's right leg and that's what made it go down on the pavement. Whew!

A few miles later, we switched bikes. Ferret rode my GT and I rode his CB1100 back to the dealership. I had ridden a CB1100 rental in Europe in 2013. I was still a fairly new rider back then and at the time it was the largest, heaviest bike I'd ridden. This time, the immediate impression was how compact the minimalistic the CB1100 is. And...how absolutely smooth and quiet. Sometimes I wasn't sure I could even hear the engine, and I could barely feel it. Quite a change from my hammerin' GT's parallel twin that very much makes you aware of its presence at all times.

Oh: first time I've ever ridden another guy's bike and found the mirrors absolutely adjusted to perfection!

Could have been bad but turned out ok. She jumped to cross the road just as I was passing her. Her first jump was straight at me, then she turned parallel to me and took 2 bounds, then she tried to get away from me and started scrambling. She leaned right, I leaned left, her momentum carried her into the side of my right leg, and as I passed she spun and went down. I lost sight of her ( nevr saw where she went after going down) but when I looked in my mirror the fawn was crossing the road and it looked like you were headed straight for it. Sounds like it crossed in front of you. Lots of deer out here, and I have encounters about once a week, but they aren't usually THAT close.lol

I worry about deer encounters because deer are just so unpredictable. One time they will stand on the side of the road and let you fly by, next time they will spin and run away from the road, and the next time they will just jump out in front of you. Stupid deer.

Just curious, but what time of the day did this deer encounter occur?
I don't normally ride at dawn or dusk just to avoid them.

1. Glad you missed, Ferrett.

2. Stichill, it's time for a change.

3. That Star Venture is quite something.

1:23 in the afternoon. I see a lot of deer around noon, as well as dusk and dawn. They are out anytime around here. When I take off on the bike, I know there is a chance I will encounter a deer. Lots of deer, very little traffic, few people.

Showed Stichill yesterday, I don't time pictures when there is no traffic.... there is no traffic lol. I don't recall seeing a car in front of us or behind us when riding the loop yesterday (and most days). The only time there is traffic is from 6:30-7:30 am and from 4:30 to 5:30 pm when the country people head into the city to work and come back home again.

I find the same thing because I ride quiet back roads. I never know when a doe is going to dart out of the bush in front of me. Never seen a buck so far, thank goodness. But had a tiny fawn run along side of me until it though better and ducked into the bush. I don't understand why they don't just stay hidden in the bush. Why cross the road in front of something you are afraid of?

There is something about motorcycles that scares them across the road. I saw one half a mile away deep in a farm field. She ran all the way to the road and jumped a fence to pass in front of me. Because I saw her coming I was able to slow down to miss her.

I have also had a black bear and young moose cross the road in front of me. The worst are the wild turkeys because the stay on the road and don't move.

Then there are the suicidal chipmunks and red squirrels. I don't know whether their hearing is bad, or they just like the game of passing as close to my front wheel as possible.

Motorcycling is an adventure!

There were a couple good reasons I gave up motorcycles back in '84. Deer made the top 3 list. This is when I lived in Duluth Minnesota. Tapped a large raccoon back then but several friend took on deer. Just got too dang stressful. It was a car that finally took me out though.

Bison. A huge one. Came around a swoopy 45 mph uphill curve in Custer State Park, SD, and there he was, standing in the middle of the road with a nasty scowl on his face. He wasn't about to move. If he rode motorcycles, he'd be riding a Harley bagger with open exhausts and ape hangers. I somehow missed him but have had nightmares about it ever since. Journey's end!
