CB1100 Idle speed instability problem
Here is the contact at American Honda support:
Kelly. 866-784-1870, extension 13810.
Tell her "Dave sent you".

Here's a copy of the letter I mailed to Honda last February

Motorcycle Division, American Honda Motor Company, Inc.
P.O. Box 2220
Torrance, California 90509 – 2200

Dear Madam or Sir:

I am the owner of a 2014 Honda CB1100 Deluxe motorcycle (one of four Honda motorcycles I presently own), and I am contacting you to request that American Honda perform repairs to correct the unstable idle problem I am experiencing that plagues many of the 2014 CB1100 Deluxe motorcycles sold in America; I am requesting that American Honda perform the same repair that has been performed in both the United Kingdom and Taiwan.

In summary:

• My bike developed this unstable idle condition over a year ago, and it comes and goes; sometimes stalling, and sometimes idling at 1,500 RPM.
• I have discussed this problem with the service department at Fun Bike Center in San Diego Ca. (where I purchased this bike new) on three separate occasions, and their response is that American Honda has not issued any service bulletins or recall notices concerning this problem, and there is nothing that they can do.
• This is a known problem that is being reported worldwide – The United States of America, Taiwan, Germany, France, and Belgium, to name a few countries. As proof, please visit: http://cb1100forum.com/forum/index/php, and go to the Section “Mechanical and Technical” and select the thread “15’ CB1100 Idle speed unstable problem” where you will find over 200 posts from CB1100 owners discussing this problem.
• Most of the problems reported outside of the United States are for engine stalling, and most of the problems being reported in the States are for engines idling at or above 1,500 RPM (my bike has experienced both, and the problem comes and goes.)
• Post #53 from the above is from Belgium, and provides a link to a video displaying a CB1100 with the stalling problem.
• Post #195 from the above is from the UK, and the author quotes Honda UK: “…the ECM was rewritten as the parameter for the idle control valve was slightly incorrect. It was a very straight forward update and should be trouble free now.”
• Post # 203 from the above is from Taiwan, and states “Here in Taiwan, recently HONDA released new (revised) ECU program to solve CB1100 idle speed problem…”.

I am confident that a similar solution to the one provided by Honda of UK and Honda of Belgium (ECM remapping) can be provided to all of the American CB1100 owners who are experiencing similar unstable idle problems, and I would like this fix to be applied to my bike as soon as possible. Please contact me at your earliest possible convenience to discuss this topic in further detail, and to arrange for Honda to remap my ECM similar to the remapping that has been performed in the UK and Taiwan.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

I assume they did not get back to you in the last 5 months then? Did you do a follow up letter?

I spoke to Kelly on the phone; I believe I posted the results of that conversation somewhere on this thread. In summary, Honda told me:
1. They were not aware of the problem.
2.There are not any re-mapping "fixes" available that they are aware of.
3. If a re-mapping fix was available in Europe then Honda could not legally re-map a U.S. bike with a map designed for a different country.
4. They are sorry that I am having a problem, but there is nothing they can do, so "have a nice day".

In other words, Honda told me to "Go Pound Sand".

Unless more people contact Honda and let them know about this situation then Honda is not going to do anything about it.

I've never head the expression 'go pound sand' before. It's not used down under. I like it, although, in this case, Dave, I'm sorry it was Honda's response.

Perhaps it's worth taking a different approach and request that Honda send a tech to your dealership to diagnose and fix the problem.

A Honda tech diagnosed and fixed johnf514's problem:

"Honda sent a tech to the dealership and they determined the IACV motor was sending faulty information to the ECU, thus causing it to enter "limp mode." The dealership replaced the IACV motor (this was 3 months ago) and the issue has not returned."

That's interesting curly. I'm not sure when johnf514's bike was fixed, but it suggests that Honda US is aware of the problem—it sent a tech to his dealer—so perhaps it's worth getting the details from John and his dealer and having another go at Honda?

Cormanus, here is his post that mentions it. I guess we could go by the date post to be close to when Johnf's bike was fixed. http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread....#pid161586

popgun, Cormanus, curlyjoe, happy to comment further. The bike was fixed in Nov 2016, and I've got emails detailing the dealership's correspondence with Honda. I removed sensitive details where appropriate:

We actually opted to not reset the ecu untill after the new IAC ( Idle air control) installation. Once the new valve was installed we started the bike to let it relearn the parameters, and idle went perfectly back to 1100 rpm. after a few other diagnostics we then reset the ecm again, So the new IAC did solve the problem.

we have some data logged from when the idle is normal & high, once we replace the Idle air control solenoid, well do it again,

Thanks Jim. I'll want to see the testing documentation on how the IACV motor was determined to be the sole source of fault . I'll also want to walk through how the bike was tested after the new motor is installed & make sure an ECU reset (if one is necessary) didn't mask the high idle issue again.

I just want to make sure this is the last time this condition comes about. Thank you.

Regards,
John

We have a idle air control motor on order.

Hi Jim,

Any updates on the bike?

johnf514 -- how many miles have you put on the bike since the repair?
Reply
postoak, since 11/2016, I've put on ~4K miles, no issues with the idle at all.
