Honda Care Extended Warranty LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE!
#21
M.G., I'm sorry you didn't know that vehicle salesmen and dealers will lie to anyone to make more money. This is why several years ago I only lasted about 4 months as a car salesman. Look at it this way, you still have a great bike and a very good warranty, the money doesn't change that. You gotta let it go and not let it keep eating at you. If you feel you need to get even with them, then post reviews that you feel you were cheated and lied to. That way you'll warn others and then maybe a few buyers will go elsewhere, costing them some profits.

To be clear, I don't like the salesman's tactics, either, but MG got what he paid for at a price which he found reasonable and which everyone here found reasonable, too. He wasn't ripped off. A rip off in this case would be if the warranty didn't cover what he was told it would cover or something along those lines. That he could have got it cheaper does not make his deal a bad one.

I suppose that my saying that folks wouldn't be helped by these posts was an overstatement, but the warning is simply that you should be know what you are willing to pay going in. I assumed that everyone whoever bought a car or a house knew this, but it is probably worth repeating.

No body tried to sell me a warranty when I bought my bike. I decided to buy it after I purchased the shop manual and read about the electronic components of the bike (ECU, ABS, Fuel Inj.), any one of which if it failed, would easily cover the cost of the warranty. If the bike had a two year factory warranty I would probably not have bothered. So the blame is on Honda for having pretty bad coverage to start with.

When I bought my Ford Edge the fellow writing up the contract laid out a very strong arm tactic on the extended warranty and even said the car was not covered unless I bought it. It was late so I said yes. Did a bit more research after I got back into town and went to the dealer and canceled it. The refund went off of the financing.

If I go back to this dealer I'll make sure the same guy does not do the contract.

I did get the extended warranty on the CB after my experience with the 650L, but it was less than $500. On the Subaru we declined the extended warranty and did not have the trouble with the sale like I had at the Ford dealer. It really varies from person to person. One reason I have kept the Edge for so long is that I really hate the buying experience (and the car has been pretty darn good). I'd rather visit the dentist.

I don't remember my dealer applying pressure to buy the extended warranty, he may have mentioned it and also said I could buy anytime in the first year......
now car sales are different story!!! I've had very high pressure tactics "after sale" to buy warranties, clear coats, etc. so bad once I reported them to the bank who the loan was through telling them about this dealer lying about rates to make the options look better!
The bank called them and they got mad at me, oh well, mission accomplished.

Yes, I did verify that it's the genuine Honda extended warranty. And, I agree, in the big picture, $190 isn't that much more. It's just the tactics used that offend me. If they would have come straight out and said, "Our price is $190 more than what you can buy online but here's the deal - if you buy it from us, it'll be wrapped up with your financing and you'll be paying only $14 a month for it. If you choose the less expensive route, you'll have to put the full amount for the warranty on your credit card and will be paying a higher interest rate if you don't pay off your credit card right away" I would probably have still bought it from the dealership.

Instead, they've left me with the impression that they're dishonest and manipulative. They've lost a customer for life over $190.

Once you include your extended warranty in the financing contract, there is no option to cancel and get your money back. The closest you can come to that is to cancel and then the finance company takes the price you paid for the extended warranty off the end of the loan. Your monthly payments stay the same and you're left without a warranty.

That's not true. You can (almost always -- depends on the warranty contract itself) cancel the extended warranty any time before the original manufacturer's warranty expires, financed or not, and the company issuing the warranty will give you, the purchaser, a check for the appropriate amount (should be 100% of the purchase price). You can then take that check, cash it, and send the same amount to the creditor on the loan to pay off that portion of the principal balance of your loan. If you're nice to the loan people, you can probably even get them to re-amortize the loan so your payments are lowered, but they're only going to go down like $20/month, so who cares about that -- you're going to end up a paying off the loan a month or two early without doing that.

Sometimes, you can even cancel the extended warranty AFTER the original manufacturer's warranty has expired, provided 1) you haven't made use of the warranty and 2) There is still time/miles on the warranty period. If those two conditions are met, the warranty issuer will usually refund a pro-rated portion of the purchase price. Again, financed or not, doesn't matter.

I also was not interested in the warranty (I do all of my own wrenching) and was ready for the F&I guy's inevitable pitch that keeps going even after you say no. I got lucky this time when the F&I guy left me an opening. It went something like this :

F&I : Now lets talk about the extended warranty.
Me : I have zero interest in buying an extended warranty.
F&I : How do you know that if I haven't told you the price?
Me : I have a really nice Bendix/King KT76A aircraft transponder at home. Would you like to buy it?
F&I : (looking confused) Well,,,no.
Me : How do you know that if I haven't told you the price?

That was the end of the extended warranty conversation.

oooohhh. me likes !

I don't have an issue with a dealer having to make a profit and making a profit, but being strung along and 'manipulated' is just disrespectful. Save it for your kids because I'm not a stupid child.

Thanks Classic. Of course I knew (suspected) that vehicle salesmen will lie but that doesn't mean I'm not entitled to be upset when they do. You're absolutely right, great bike and good (hopefully, unneeded) warranty. And it's not eating away at me. The only reason it seem like I'm dwelling on it is because people keep telling me to let it go and I keep responding! Haha. I'm totally good. It's not so much about getting even with them but more about telling others here what I experienced in hopes that they could take something away from it.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from but I spoke directly with Honda Care just this afternoon and asked what my options were regarding cancelling the extended warranty. The person I spoke with was very helpful and explained that if I cancelled the extended warranty, the amount paid would be credited against the loan balance at an amount pro-rated from the date of purchase. In other words, no check is issued to you, your monthly payments stay the same, and the amount refunded gets lower the longer you maintain the warranty.

I imagine different states may have different laws that protect consumers and cover our ability to cancel extended warranties. Maybe in your state, you have that option. When I called HondaCare it was a 1-800 number but I had to put in my state and zip code first. It seems that at least in California, it's how I've explained it.

Me, I'm just going to keep it at this point and move on. Unless, of course, I keep getting messages to "let it go...you'll feel better...life is too short." Haha. Then I'll be back to gripe some more!

I stand by my messages and I hope some of you out there find them helpful. Use whatever money you save to buy cool after market parts for your CB and post up photos!
This video has been around for a while but for those of you who haven't seen it, it's worth watching. I hope to be this old when I finally think, I wish my CB was still under warranty!

It is indeed different per state. In FL (the only copy of the contract I could find online) you have 60 days to terminate the contract for a 100% refund. (the refund is also sent to you with the lien holder as a joint payee [like insurance claims]) I would think CA, being very consumer-friendly, would have something similar. Did you get a chance to read the actual contract? The exact terms under which the contract can be cancelled and what kind of refund you're entitled to are spelled out right in the contract itself.

On the other hand, $190 over the term of your loan isn't a whole lot of money. :-)

I just read this thread, pretty entertaining. I just received in the mail Honda's extended warranty plan. They are also offering roadside assistance. Its $763 for 4 years and $836 with the roadside. Seems to have gone up a lot in a year. I usually don't buy extended warranty's, but this is my first new bike purchase. Advise ? What about the roadside assistance ?
