For those of you wanting to defeat the speed limiter...
#21
Ok, here is the deal. My bike does not have ABS. But on
the back wheel there is bracket on the rear rotor holding
a sensor with a black wire running into a wiring harness
near the Airbox cover. Disconnect this wire, and your
speed limiter is disconnected. So is your speedometer.
Sorry you cannot disconnect one without the other which
may be illegal in some states as your mileage will now be
altered.

Just wondering. Has anyone successfully disabled the speed limiter?

I stumbled upon this thread when I googled the speed limiter. Dr Dyno had my bike on the dyno machine up at Americade this weekend, and we were both surprised to discover the speed limiter. In gears 4-6, the limiter would kick in before the bike was making full power. For anyone interested, peak HP in 3rd gear was 89.85, with 66.92 ft/lbs.

That a good hp reading for this bike.

Keep in mind that this HP reading occurred ( it appears) at or close to sea level

I think I would buy a CBR1000RR before messing around with this bike like that. "It is what it is". Interesting nevertheless.

Yep, you can have your ECM reflashed and remove the speed limiter and even remove or move the rpm limiter. It costs ~$350
Search on Don Guhl and numerous threads about it will come up.

$375.00 actually, includes 2 day return shipping.
IMO, best mod you can do, even if you don't care about the speed limiter.
We had the ignition and fuel maps changed and the limit raised 500 rpm. Makes a big difference and didn't affect economy, I still got 50 mpg at the rally.
There are apps for your phone, the one I use is called Speed View, it's free and will show your speed as you travel if you want it to. Way cheaper and easier, totally eliminates any conjecture or disconnecting stuff. Just leave your speedo as is. When you want to do a top speed run you set the app to record the run, put the phone in a handlebar mount or in your pocket or tank bag and check it afterward. I've done a run after the reflash and it showed 132 mph. The bike was totally stable with no issues at all. My run was about 5 miles and the highest speed was achieved in 4th gear. It slowed down when shifted into 5th, indicating being limited by aerodynamic drag. I was tucked in as tight as I could be, not running any kind of shield.
I'm going to do another run sometime in the near future to see if it's any faster with the Yoshimura full system I put on. It feels like it's been uncorked now, very strong. And does it sound great Wink Going to see if the numbers bear it out.

There is no recalibration or speed healer needed with these bikes because the speed is read off the rear wheel, not at the transmission.
