(12-26-2019, 05:58 AM)peterbaron_imp Wrote: Never mind overflow valve. K&N LEAK, leading to possible disaster while riding!!! Stay away from it and use Honda OEM oil filters.
I have used them for quite some time and never have experienced any problems, leaks or anything else.

Guys, I have been using K&N oil filters for years, even on my 2003 Triumph Speedmaster. I have never even had so much as a drop of oil leak from any bike. This post started 6 years ago, and I still think the lack of the pressure relief valve in the old filter may have caused this. I run both filters in my CB1100 and Z900RS, with no problems. The one have been in the Zed for 700 miles already, and no leaks or problems. I run Motul oil in both bikes, 300V in the Kawi and Motul 7100 in the Honda. The combos work great in both bikes. I taken the Zed up to 110 several times (in about 3 seconds!) to speed test it. Runs like a demon. I have been a loyal K&N user of both air/oil filters for over 20 years, and the possibility of being put on too tight/too lose or hitting debris may also be a cause. I have never really trusted OEM filters from China. NEVER have used them in any bike. I have used Wix, Fram or STP motorcycle filters when I could not find an K&N, without any issues, but these were one time use until I could get an K&N. If I ever seen even the slightest leak, and it just does not need tightening, I will post it here, but I will continue with only the newer K&N oil filters. Adios from South Texas where we hit a beautiful 75F today!

My only question is : Is the K&N oil filter perhaps also made in China ?
I only ever use the OEM filters from Honda as I trust them more than after market filters.

If you’ve never used OEM filters, how do you know they are not as effective as the K&N filters? There are multiple reports of problems with the K&N filter for the CB1100 on this forum. There are also multiple reports of years of trouble-free use of the OEM filter. I agree that the K&N issue may stem from improper installation so I’m not willing to condemn the company, but since the OEM filters seem to work perfectly well, I see no reason to risk using something else. Just my opinion of course.

Have a great ride.

It's actually a bypass valve in an oil filter, isn't it? Opens if the pressure differential across the media is too great, to prevent oil starvation and to protect the media from rupture in the case of cold oil or plugged media. When the valve opens the oil is passed directly to the filter outlet without traveling through the filter media. I saved the original 15410-mfj-d01 Honda filter from my '17 EX and it says 'assembled in USA', for whatever that is worth. The replacement Honda filter also says this.

Wix cross references the Honda filter to their WL10000, which I only point out because they list the bypass valve to be set at 8psi. According to the Lubrication System Diagram (pg 4-2 in the service manual) the pressure relief valve is located between the pump and the oil filter, so the setting (or absence) of an integral bypass valve in the oil filter shouldn't cause excessive pressure to be seen by the oil filter case. At least that is how I read this.
