How much does a shop charge?
Like most things- my biggest fear would be they wouldn't put anywhere near the time, care and attention to detail that I can when I have the leisure of my own garage over as many days as I want.
The work once inside is time consuming...and I repeated all the measurements over and over again just to make sure after the reground cams through it ALL OUT OF WACK!
A normal adjustment shouldn't be too horrible but the older I get- the more my time is worth- so I can see what a shop charges what they do.
And yea... I have had the 'joy' of removing and installing the valve cover when swapping from a black one to brushed, and then when doing the cams.... it is a tight fit and a lot of wtf and careful wiggling.

Therein lies the rub. Some shops don't even do any work, and they charge you for it. My old shop in South Carolina would swap shims, no charge. The Honda dealer near me doesn't carry any shims. I asked what they did with the old ones they remove from bikes and the service mgr got very nervous and said they throw them away because they are "wear items." They were certainly not doing adjustments at all--they couldn't be. Another local dealer only had every other size shim, which does you no good. I don't trust anybody but me (and Max
