CB1100 Idle speed instability problem

Thats when it could stall...

I did about 3 times in a row because I thought it was going to stall, but it didn't.

Went for a 90 mile ride late afternoon with 90+ temp through rolling hills, not many stops, idle fine till about 1.5 hours into the ride. Stopped to get something to drink and the idle fell to about 550-600 and bike seemed as if it were going to die, but didn't. I have not had this issue, only the high idle. I let the bike idle and watched as the needle slowly crept back up to 1000, where it stayed. I let the bike cool for half an hour. Did the throttle reset sequence. Bike idle was right at 1000. Rode another half hour home where idle again dipped to 550, but rose to 1000 in less than 5 seconds and it idled fine at that point. Not sure if that happens for others at any time, but it's (the low idle) the first time it happened for me. Bike runs fine otherwise, no high idle.

I always thought, that my CB is only a candidate for high idleing. I'm wrong. Since some weeks I know better and out of nowherer, my Honda sometimes behaves like you deschribe it in your post. The idle falls down and then slowly ceeps back to round 1.000 revs. Til this phenomena disappears and reoccurres. Seems like the low idleing is a substitute for the high. I noticed it a few times on my tour in the UK. If I shall give an explanation for it, I'm not a CB doctor, my theory is as follows: some CBs fall into a high idle, if they feel that they are not warmed up enough even after enough miles for doing so. The same the other way round, they lower the idle, if they gain the impression of getting to warm. Riding a while with low speeds in a more kind of stop and go traffic offers me this low idle thing. Seems, that the CB tries to prevent overheating.

My initial problem with the high idle seems to have gone away after throttle reset, sea foam, and WOT riding. The low idle happened yesterday for the first time. The common riding characteristic that seems to have triggered both instances was riding for over an hour--but not stop and go traffic, rather I was in the countryside at speeds of 40-60mph with few stops. The first instance with the high idle was an 80 degree day, yesterday was slightly over 90.

I'll probably live with it for a while to see if it acts up consistently and to see if cooler weather brings about fewer issues. My attempt here is to document what happens over time, try any possible fixes without breaking the bank.
