Update when i spoke to the DVLA the other day about another matter I brought this up and the lady said she could find no signs that the engine had been changed, ie photos sent in etc, which I presume is part of the process in registering a change of engine. Honda have also got back to me and said the following
"Please be kindly advised that as per our established procedures we would only be able to confirm whether the engine number is original or not. If you wish for us to do that, please provide us with the current engine number of the vehicle."
Hopefully I'm getting somewhere. The reasons I wanted to know were 1/ the chainguard is scuffed at the front edge leading me to suspect it has made contact or possibly come off (I'm thinking that could have caused a lot of damage) 2/ More chain wear than i would expect, for example there is a tight spot already 3/ evidence of the exhaust flange nuts having a spanner on them and 4/ (this is covered elsewhere) ticking (valve noise) when warming up. The bike only had 2000 on it when i bought it. Apart from those things I have had no issues with it only the oil darkening a little quicker than i expected, after 3-5 hundred miles.
