If you fly over the Western part of our country, you will see that it is HUGE. Western states are much larger than they appear on a Mercator projection. From an airliner you can see roads that go for, maybe, hundreds of miles through deslolate country. I can imagine that going the speed limit would take forever to get anywhere.

You can see houses that are literally in the middle of nowhere.
