i wont run tank bags anymore for that exact reason, i've learned to embrace racks. however, a nice soft cloth will help under it. what is the 'tank mounting base' you are talking about?

The latter couple suggestions are handy workarounds.

Remember to clean the chosen barrier between it and the tank from time-to-time to minimize any trapped abrasive dust slowly dulling the paint finish. Even vendor-supplied tank bag magnetic bases need a cleaning from time-to-time, depending how harsh your riding environment has been.

An alternative might be to utilize a tank ring (e.g. from Givi, SW-Motech) which tends to lift (at least) smaller tank bags above the paint surface.
