Yes. On that awesome web site that Honda created to go into the details of why the new CB1100 is soo darn cool (and it is) an engineer says that the engine is originally based upon a cb 1300 w/c lump, that was then redesigned from the ground up, as honda hasn't made an air/oil cooled big bore I4 in twenty years, and none of the current crop of engineers had any knowledge/skills building one from the ground up.
OP, I have no problem with any go fast mods to the CB, hell, if everyone had pooh-poohed the idea with the original cb750, think what we would have missed out on! A friend has/had THE honda cb750 that set the bonneville land speed record in '80 (or thereabouts) and that was one crazy fast bike!
