I started a thread a few days ago about a dealer switching my front wheel spacers to the wrong sides during a tire change. I didn't catch this and tried to install the front wheel that way.
I tried to reinstall the front wheel with the spacers on the correct sides and it seems that when I installed it with the spacers on the wrong sides it shifted the bearings in the hub, lifting the right side bearing off it's seat in the hub.
I'm no mechanic but I do design machinery for a living and know a thing or two about bearings. If I pound that right bearing back in it will cause the bearing distance collar to move the left bearing by pounding on the inner race only, never a good idea. I am afraid I will damage the left bearing. It might work O.K. if I slowly pressed the right bearing back to it's seat on an arbor press.
I think the correct way is to pull the right bearing with a puller, remove the bearing distance collar and pound the left bearing towards the outside of the hub with the correct tool. Then reinstall the distance collar and right bearing. Then pound the left bearing until it seats on the distance collar. If the distance collar can only be installed from the left side after the right bearing is installed then both bearings need to be pulled and reinstalled.
Any thoughts?
