The tank is very simple to change and like you said, the hardest part is that dang fuel connection.
I would guess that with only 1/2 gallon of fuel you might have been hearing the float banging in the botton of the tank.
There is no special reset for the computer for a pump change. As far as MPG, it will take a little riding for the computer to calculate it.
Not coming up to full I don’t really have an answer for unless the float is somehow hung up, or you put on a larger fuel tank from a different model.
I have a ‘13 and due to a garage incident had to replace my tank. Everything went smoothly though.
