All, thanks for the input. 
I finally got some time to finish this. I hate cutting and splicing wires so if I can avoid it, I do. I ended up simply drilling a hole in the accessory connector cap (the white one that I am holding in the pic) directly above the switched lead. I soldered the end of the power wire coming off the grips to make it rigid. I passed that wire through the hole in the cap and pushed it into the connector, reattached the cap and placed a drop of glue around the wire where it comes through the cap. I attached the ground wire to the frame. No cutting or splicing! Grips work great and shut off with the key. they are super clean looking too as the control is integrated into the grip. $115!
