Guys, I have been using K&N oil filters for years, even on my 2003 Triumph Speedmaster. I have never even had so much as a drop of oil leak from any bike. This post started 6 years ago, and I still think the lack of the pressure relief valve in the old filter may have caused this. I run both filters in my CB1100 and Z900RS, with no problems. The one have been in the Zed for 700 miles already, and no leaks or problems. I run Motul oil in both bikes, 300V in the Kawi and Motul 7100 in the Honda. The combos work great in both bikes. I taken the Zed up to 110 several times (in about 3 seconds!) to speed test it. Runs like a demon. I have been a loyal K&N user of both air/oil filters for over 20 years, and the possibility of being put on too tight/too lose or hitting debris may also be a cause. I have never really trusted OEM filters from China. NEVER have used them in any bike. I have used Wix, Fram or STP motorcycle filters when I could not find an K&N, without any issues, but these were one time use until I could get an K&N. If I ever seen even the slightest leak, and it just does not need tightening, I will post it here, but I will continue with only the newer K&N oil filters. Adios from South Texas where we hit a beautiful 75F today!

If you’ve never used OEM filters, how do you know they are not as effective as the K&N filters? There are multiple reports of problems with the K&N filter for the CB1100 on this forum. There are also multiple reports of years of trouble-free use of the OEM filter. I agree that the K&N issue may stem from improper installation so I’m not willing to condemn the company, but since the OEM filters seem to work perfectly well, I see no reason to risk using something else. Just my opinion of course.
Have a great ride.
