Well heck! Glad you got off the road okay. You did a great job keeping your head in a really dodgy situation! I await your followup posts.
I have been running K&N filters all along with no trouble, but that means nothing.
You said this other guy's filter had a break between the body and bolt of the filter? I can't imagine how that would happen except possibly 1) he over-tightened the filter using the bolt, or 2) he hit something. I always just tighten the filter by hand so as to not damage the gasket. Anyhow, I hope you find no damage and get back on the road soon!
