Oiling cylinders for winter storage?
#1
I can crank the engine without starting if I hold the throttle fully open while pressing the starter button. Will this coat the cylinders with oil for winter storage? Is it a good idea to coat cylinders with oil for long term storage? Removing spark plugs to do this through the hole seems like a lot of work.

Just leave it alone. It will be fine.

Depends on where it's being stored. I have a pretty dry garage under the house so I don't do it. If you are stuck with a damp environment and a long time for storage (very possible in Pitt) then you might coat it. just my ,02. TM

For a year or more storage, I would drip some drops into each cylinder and rotate the crankshaft.

I used to do that for a single seasonal storage, but stopped because I found myself riding the machine during the season.

We used to do that on watercraft, but not on the bikes. The watercraft have water boxes as part of the exhaust that are never fully empty. Figure a motor with an exhaust valve open to the wet water box and sitting for a period of time was known for rusting motor internals.
IMHO- Unless you store the bike in a really damp environment or for a REALLY long time....as in YEARS, I wouldn't bother fogging.

This practice is more prevalent in lawn care and power equipment Honda engines. You only want to be doing oil injection into a motorcycle cylinder if plan not to turn the engine over for years, it gives the piston rings a fighting chance not to stick and the piston skirt to drag on start-up.
