I just read this thread, walked out into the garage, don't want to be a Debbie Downer but, my CB is showing some rust also. Cormanus , Don't use WD40 or any spray that is not suitable for use on rubber. For instance, I use INOX to prevent corrosion on kayak and fishing gear. Great stuff but can't use on rubber. I have been using a good grade silicone spray but even that is not suitable for prolonged use on rubber. Don't ask me what prolonged means, in this case it's one of those weasel words ![]() However, all is not lost. On the cb1100forum.com there is a thread concerning aviation grade lubricants and water displacers. If no one jumps in I will get off my blot and use the search engine. These products should be available in Oz, after all, we can fly aeroplanes to (joke guys, please don't flame me). I am going to follow this up but, from memory, I think the distributor was QLD based so give me a hand* if you like.Cheers. *WARNING: there may be traces of corny jokes in this post.

Ok, I work on radar, but the mech in our office says that oleo struts work almost exactly like the forks on a motorcycle. There is very little difference. The three oleo struts on my plane work just like upside down motorcycle forks (i.e. slider is on top). There's a provision for adding pressurized air for additional cushioning effect, which is present on some motorcycle forks (but bikes tend to use vastly lower air pressure). By the way, after a year out here in the desert, where rain is rare and humidity is below 20% most of the time, not a spot of rust on my CB11. It sits an unheated / uncooled garage uncovered when it's not on the road (which is 3-4 days a week).

OK, so I sent the pics to my dealer. Then called him a couple hours later. He agreed with me, it is not right. He called his Honda rep and the rep told him Honda will make it right with me. But the dealer needs to "put his eyes on the bike" before anything happens.
So I will drive it over there and let him do just that. I'll keep you all informed on what happens.

Pterodactyl and popgun, thank you very much indeed.
Waddaya know? There's a stockist a mere half an hour away. Sadly he might have to wait until next week as I've a heap to do today including getting some of that rust off the bike and getting myself back to Brisbane. Let's see. Thanks again, guys. Wouldn't it bloody rotate you! They don't have it and at least one dude there thinks they can't get it any more. Grrrr. I'll concentrate on cleaning the bike today and get back to the longer term fix in due course. BTW, one dude in a bike shop yesterday said Turtle Wax is as good as anything on chrome to stop the rust getting in. Ole: good luck with your discussion with the dealer.

Cormanus,
The ACF-50 would be for the metal parts. The 303 is for the plastic stuff. I had 303 on the brain. |
