Break in oil?

I use to build race engines for a dirt track car and we always primed them before the first start up. Ran 10w30 to break it in at rpm's above 2000 for 30 min. changing the rpms. Shut it down let cool and run it for another 30 min. changing the rpms. We would then change the oil to Mobil 1 20w50 and ran the snot out of them.
Their lifter stuck because it wiped the cam lobe off. May have not used enough assembly lube on the cam and lifters. So who knows who's at fault. Aaron's pretty smart guy though.

I respect Aaron's talent, no doubt the guy is a mechanical genius. He reminds me a lot of my brother in law "Rachet," (deceased, RIP) who could repair, rebuild, or fabricate anything from airplanes to windmills. However, I think a lot of the problems Gas Monkey encounters are self-inflicted. That Bandit car, for instance, had been sitting for months or years. The guys did WOT burnouts and donuts with it before they even looked under the hood. Maybe if they'd serviced it first it wouldn't have blown up.

I totally agree, they do some things I would never do before checking a car over. I guess it makes drama for the show.

Most of what are called "reality shows" are heavily manipulated by the producers to make them more interesting. Things like what you describe will go unnoticed by people who have never brought a barn vehicle back to life, but those of us that have, know that the likelihood of firing up a barn stored Mustang without lifting the hood is close to zero.

The more likely scenario is that this was a running Mustang that was rolled into a barn and covered with hay and chickens for the viewing audience.

I changed my oil at 600 miles and am now at the dealership changing
it again at 1350 miles. I like to get 2 oil changes done quickly
when the engine is new. I'm changing to synthetic. I use Mobil 1
in my cars... Yamalube synthetic in the KLR and Syn3 in the Harley.
The Honda dealer uses Motor Ex. I've never heard of that brand.
They have a cool website... but that means little. Does anyone have
any experience with or knowledge of this brand? And they're charging
me $107.00 for the change. How difficult is it to do this change,
filter and oil, by yourself? I'm relatively handy... but have moved away
from doing these types of things. Yet, $107 seems excessive. Thoughts?

Wow...that is a bit much to me. Even at $10 a quart and $6-$10 for the filter they are hitting you a bit hard on the labor for just an oil change.

Hi, oil and filter change is quite easy, shouldng take more than 45mins incl drinking 2 cups of tea.
Page 61&62 in the small handbook shows you how.
Will post pics if needed.
Tools needed:
Oil filter strap.
Spanner for sump plug, think its 17mm.
Bowl for catching oil.
Have a go....

Here's another reason why I think there's no such thing as break-in oil:
Years ago when I worked on VWs, we would tear an engine down and do a complete overhaul; new cam, main, rod bearings, rod bushings, hone the cylinders, new rings, etc. and after all of that we'd fill the crankcase up with the same oil that was used for normal oil changes. Also, I've never seen "break-in" oil in an auto parts store, either. I think it's like Bigfoot, a myth. Beer

I could go on, but suffice to say it's no myth.

"Years ago" oil had MUCH higher levels of [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_dithiophosphate]ZDDP than it does now due to tighter emissions regulations. With the proliferation of roller valve trains the need for it has been reduced and this had allowed the government to pass more stringent regulations in regards to ZDDP and thus "break in oil" was born. It is ONLY to be used for short periods to break in an engine, not full oil change intervals UNLESS the engine is of a flat tappet design with no catalyst. ZDDP destroys the catalyst in a much shorter time frame than it would normally wear out.

Check out the "how to section", Ferret put together a great 600 mile service with pic's that covers the oil change. I bought the Honda filter and non-syn Honda oil and did the change myself, it is very easily a do-it-yourself job. Going to switch to the syn next oil change.
