A good friend wanted a 2018 Ecoboost Mustang convertible with a manual. Six month delivery. All US manuals have had the clutch-only start for years now as well.

My current Fiesta better last a long time...

I worked at Disneyland in the 80s. There was a fleet of service trucks roaming the parking lot, guided by spotters in towers with a complete view of the lot. Among other things, they were looking for guests with hoods up. There had been several instances where a good Samaritan would try to help jump-start someone else's dead car. Two cars, nose-to-nose, cabled up, usually with someone standing between them. If one car was a manual, and the engine was started in gear without the clutch in, wham, bad day for the guy between the cars, and we sue Disney as it was on their property. The service trucks would try to get there to help before someone might hurt themselves.

2019 Kia Soul base model, 1.6 liter, 6 speed manual, no remote door operation, but cruise control can be added for ~$70 in Kia parts.

Sorry - have to ask: In few words, how is the 1.6L 6-speed Soul? Punchy enough?

Not impressive 0-60, but does well on highway.

Took it up Lee Canyon on Monday to visit wild horses.
The 2 lane climbs from ~3,000 feet to over 8,500 feet in about 14 miles.
If I do the 55 MPH speed limit, it needs 4th and 3rd to hold speed (3 grand kids aboard)
If I do 65, it will pull it in 5th and 4th (wife aboard)

Pulling that grade, trip computer shows 24 MPG, but round trip was 36 MPG.
I can haul 4 grandkids and gear.

Corners like a go-cart.

I used to have an Aprilia. It had riding modes, Sport, Touring, Rain. The procedure to switch from one to the other was to start the engine, then press the start button again to activate the computer to change modes. Nerve-wracking at first, but it worked. If the engine was running, it did not activate the starter.

Strange that. The Aprilia Mana allowed the rider to switch between riding modes on-the-fly while riding. Just press, hold for about 1 to 2 seconds, mode switched, done. Engine behaviour change was immediately available.

Mine was a Shiver. It could change on the fly, too, but I never did. I didn't want to be looking at a dim screen trying to change modes while moving forward. I left it in Touring all the time, anyway, but it did have an affinity for changing modes on its own sometimes.

I'm pretty much convinced that the manual transmission/clutch combo will be a thing of the past in cars and on motorcycles sooner than we can imagine. This will be followed by the demise of internal combustion engine itself. Enjoy what you can while you can.

I am sure future electric bikes will leverage AI, solid-state electro-mechanical devices and energy efficient power electronics to simulate gear [clunk] changes, and "engine" thunder via an advanced audio system. All conveniently programmable via a smartphone app, of which you can store multiple profiles like, a Harley, a Vespa, a Monkey, an RD350, etc.

(I hope not)

Yet Guth, you have a point: How many people today throb to feel the soul of the steam engine?
