Stock Exhaust

I never got to experience the stock exhaust on my CB as I bought it used with a Delkavic slip on installed, and the one I test rode had a similar Yosh slip on... I was pretty quick to pull the baffle out which helped, but its still a remarkably quiet bike.

If I wanted a super loud and obnoxious bike I'd have gotten a v-twin with straight pipes, but I do wish the CB was a bit louder, if only for the sake of being more conspicuous on the road.

Some people will argue that loud pipes don't actually help motorists hear you, and this is probably true in a lot of cases, but I've never seen anyone try to argue that the negatives of being loud other than that it po's people off, or hearing loss I guess (wear plugs?)... It seems to come from mostly older guys who only ride on the weekends on empty back roads, not that there's anything wrong with that, but from someone who rides through a busy city like Los Angeles where idiots in cars are already incompetent/ distracted enough, it makes me nervous being so quiet... To the point where I keep the revs higher than they probably should be.

Yeah, I actually do the same in terms of keeping the revs a bit higher for (1) the additional tone in hopes of being more noticed and (2) to stay in the fat (3-5k) part of the powerband in case I need to make a speedy maneuver because of the texting and driving person next to me encroaches on my lane unexpectedly. It's a tense way to have to ride, but I ride in the city a good amount as opposed to free and clear country roads. I know there are times when I'm driving with my windows up and can't even see a bike but can hear that one is nearby or in my general vicinity and it makes me immediately re-check all mirrors to see if I can spot them.

Hi All,

I am a newly minted CB1100 owner and wanted to get everyone's opinion on the stock exhaust system. I love my bike and appreciate all the great and subtle details that make it awesome but am finding the exhaust to be too quiet. It is almost to the point of me feeling its lack of "speaking up" makes it tougher for people to notice me in city traffic. I know this is easily remedied by getting an aftermarket exhaust, but I wanted to know if other members similarly felt the stock system is a bit quiet for their tastes and also, the best aftermarket system for a nice sound (not necessarily the loudest).

The following are just my thoughts and opinions based on many years of experience.

You may be a new or somewhat inexperienced rider, if not I apologize.
If you feel you need the noise of your bike to make your presence known to car drivers, you are making a big mistake. New cars are so sound insulated even the loudest Harley is nearly negated, and even if car drivers pick up on the noise of a bike, they ignore it. Forget making your bike louder and concentrate on being a better defensive rider.
You must be a short trip, drive around town rider.
I have done a lot of long trip riding, 500 to 2000 mi. trips. I learned a long time ago that the louder the bikes exhaust the more it wore me out over the hours of trip time. For this reason I love the quietness of the CB.

I commute daily, and leave my neighborhood before the sun rises. My neighbors never complained about my old bike, but I feel a lot less guilty riding my quiet CB that climbs through my very hilly neighborhood without waking them or their dogs.
