chain guard extension

Made this little chain guard extension today. I hate the little splatters of oil up on the luggage rack and bottom of my top box and rear fender, etc.

Cut it out and shaped it from some old aluminum flat stock I had lying around...JBWelded it to the underside of the guard and I'll paint it black to match when I get a chance and hopefully it'll blend it OK.

Looks kind of shade-tree but works good.

Have you tried Dupont Teflon Chain Saver - chain lube? goes on wet dries to a waxy feel - nothing sling off the chain once it dries. My Dad has been using it for a while on his flat tracker. I have been very impressed so far.

Looks a lot better than shade tree to me. Function is beauty as they say.

Yeah, good stuff; I used it exclusively on my '08 Sprint ST and got 34k out of the original chain and sprockets.

On the new CB though I'm going to experiment a little and just use the 'oily rag' treatment: Every few hundred miles wipe it clean with a bit of WD40 and then apply a dollop or so of gear oil (80/90 weight)... not so much that it drips and slings off but just enough to make it nicely 'wet' looking. Sounds messy but it's not.

At any rate, I've been doing this to the Bonneville, and at a bit over 11K miles the chain and sprockets are like new.

I'd like to get one of the automatic electronic oilers eventually but so far haven't been willing to pay the price (not that I think they aren't worth the money, I'm just a tightwad).

Actually, I don't mine the routine of cleaning, lubing and generally fussing with a chain... I do it with the weekly cleaning, tire pressure checks, etc, and with the good quality drive chains available today (like on our CB!) they really do go a long way with just minimal care.
