...Is the comment my wife just made. She's sitting at her desk in our guest room, turned Covid19 Telemedicine Bunker.

She just got off of a call with a patient, and looking out the window commented "Huh, the neighbors across the street are getting new carpet."

Me: "Awesome, I hope they leave a nice new remnant piece in the dumpster that I can use to lay on for chain lubing and oil changes!"

Gotta keep your priorities straight!

Oh my gosh, Peking, you have no idea how close you are to the mark. When I was a kid growing up in Torrance in the mid '70s, my best friend's dad was a pot farmer and distributor. Common now, but somewhat exotic and cool in the '70s. The fact that it was massively illegal only elevated his cool factor in my eyes. Mind you, my Mom was single, worked all day, and had no idea that I was hanging around these people.

They had moved from Illinois, and dad, Gordy, drove a '60s Econoline cargo van that had formerly been a Chicago Bears equipment van. Since it was painted in Bears colors with their logo on the side, he had spray painted it flat black. The only passenger accommodations in the back of this windowless van was a big piece of brown shag carpet on the metal floor in the cargo area. There were no seats in the back.

When the weed was harvested and bagged, Gordy would load his boy, Billy, and I in the back of the van, and he'd drive around town distributing bags of weed to his sellers. He'd take turns and brake erratically, and Billy and I would bounce around the back of the van like we were in a tumble dryer, trying to hold on to the carpet.

Ahh, memories.

Grabbed me a nice big piece of carpet yesterday, and will enjoy its comfort when I do my low-level motorcycle projects.

We moved to California in the early 70's and ended up in Torrance for a year while the Ole Man looked to buy a house. Torrance was a strange place for a kid from rural New York State. Indeed their was "Pot" everywhere, something that I had not even heard of before. This was a time before DARE and just say no, but I never tried it. I was a Jock type and didn't smoke anything anyway. Looks like Gordy did a bang-up business in the spirt of capitalism! Later while in High School in the SFV a buddy had a van too, but we used it for other carnal pursuits! Ha ha.

Yeah, Gordy was the Elon Musk of weed in the South Bay. It was a great place to grow up. There were no boundaries for kids back then. Just “be back for dinner.” The beach was a bike ride away.

Back in those days..... I grew up in Long Beach and we didn't even have to be home for dinner then. We'd have hide 'n' seek games roam for blocks around after dark, ride our bicycles to the Zody's for ice cream and hot dogs, hang out in a vacant lot that somehow had standing water in it, with polywogs and frogs, ride in the back of pickups standing up, stuff that would get parents arrested these days.

When I was a teenager "growing up" in Holland I did many things with my friends that I am not very proud of now at 70 years old. Most of these episodes were fueled by alcohol. But I never smoked cigarettes , pot or drugs and I am still healthy with no regrets.
