Replacing Fuel Tank
#1

Ok, so I have already researched around and found where to get a tank...my question is this. If I replace the stock fuel tank on my 2014 Standard (3.9 Gallons) and fit it with the tank from a DLX (4.7~ gallons), will it mess with the fuel gauge, as in inaccurate readings? Will I have to make any other modifications?

I did a search on this site and I don't think this was directly addressed...anyone done such a modification?

I believe in the manual the stds and dlxs fuel pumps are different and have different flow rates. Some one will correct me if I'm wrong. You should be able to go close to 200 miles on a tank on your 14 std. How far do you want to go?

Yeah, again, it's hard to find any of this info online (referring to flow rates). It would be so much easier if I could just google this info but it just isn't out there. What makes this bike so cool (it's clearly becoming a cult classic) also makes it next to impossible to find info on with the interwebs.

...I'll go as far as she will let me. That being said, I really do like the idea of having almost an extra gallon at my disposal. You're talking about almost 50 extra miles on the highway. I do want to be able to tour a bit with this beast.
Also, from what I can tell on the parts site it's the same fuel pump for both bikes.

Same pump and sender assembly, so....no. You don't have to worry about the accuracy of the fuel gauge.

well many of us have toured on them, thousands of miles, many states. You could always pop an auxiliary fuel bottle in your trunk or saddlebags.

***edit Randy are you sure are you are comparing the fuel pump from a dlx to a standard? I'm sure I recall this coming up before.

found some threads on the subject if you care to read them

I think I see what you are looking at, I wonder if it's just the difference in the model years...13 vs 14. I will say that when I was looking for the part it listed both models of 2014 as a fit but not the previous year, so that's entirely possible...

...for what it's worth, not saying I'm definitely changing the tank, but it was a thought. Fuel bottles are DEFINITELY cheaper! As always, I very much appreciate the input...this is an extremely informative source and you all have a serious passion for this bike!

I looked up the replacement parts online for the 2014 bikes and they use the same parts except for the tank. Everything else comes up the same.

DLX:

STD:

Now the 2013 shows a different pump, but the 2014's use the same pump between the two tanks.

ahhh maybe that's the difference. They were trying to put the bigger tanks on 13's and not 14's.

Hope it works out Metsdude.
