Adding an oil pressure gauge
#1

Hello everyone,
Just purchased a beautiful 14' STD and was curious about adding an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on things. Does anyone know of an oil galley plug I can remove to install one or better yet, a way to tap into an oil cooler lines. Just curious.
Glad to be a part of the group!

Hello Howdy and welcome to the forum.

Someone may know something about that. Can't remember anyone having done it to one of these. Oil pressure hasn't been a problem with these and the bike has been out since 2010. We have a couple members with over 100,000 miles on their bikes.

Hello and welcome to the forum, wiscoaircraftmech....

Oil pressure switch is located at R/F bottom as per pic, covered by the black rubber boot and indicated by green s-driver knob::

or without boot:

Have fun.

Congrats W.M. the bike has an oil pressure regulator which maintains pressure at a set level, depending on which part of the engine you want to monitor you may find a place downstream of the pump which is meaningful to keep an eye out for.
Also adding something to the oil system may increase the risk of that part failing and causing a problem but judging by your nickname you would be familiar with that scenario.

I think popgun had a diagram of how the oil is routed in our bikes, it may not be what you expect since the sparkplugs are oil cooled too on our bikes, maybe he can find it again or you can search for it with the search at the top of this page.

And since we are in oil territory i would add a warning not to use these k&n oil filters with a hexagon nut spotwelded to the top to make it easy to remove them, they fail spectacularly on a regular basis and this is well documented if you did not know this already.

Max, that oil routing diagram is in the service manual. I’ll go take a look at it. It is in section 4.

It actually shows that we have 2 oil pumps in one. The Cooler Pump sends oil to the oil cooler (go figure Smile ) and spark plugs, and the Feed Pump whose output goes to the oil filter. The EOP switch is mounted at the end of the oil filter output and after 2 tees that send oil to the the rest of the engine.

The EOT switch is mounted on the output line of the spark plug output ( or, the path is sump to oil cooler to spark plugs to the sump. EOT is between the spark plugs and sump.

In looking at the bike, there are a few gallery plugs that could possible be used, but I don’t know. Unless someone knows, I would think you might need a service manual to look at the oil flow diagram and crankcase, etc. sections to figure it all out.

Wisco, we cannot post copyrighted material. If you would like to see the flow diagram, PM me.

I had a sailboat with a diesel engine with a low-pressure alarm that I wanted to add a gauge to. I "T" into the alarm port, added my own sender unit, and ran a wire up to the cockpit. Worked great.
