Fehling crash bars
#1

Hi all from lock-down UK.
A couple of months ago I got a set of chrome Fehling crash bars for my 2013 cast-wheel and I thought to use this enforced period of stay-at-home to actually fit them.
Now for the life of me I can't see how the right hand side is fitted as no matter what I do, the bar that is supposed to go on the forward engine mount bolt is an inch away and there doesn't seem to be any way to manouevre it into place.
Has anybody got any step-by-step instructions please (the ones provided consist of a parts list and two photographs of the left hand side of the bike, neither of which help).
Thanks in advance and stay healthy.
Cheers
Chris

I started to reply, then realized it was crash bars and not handlebars.
Sorry, can't help.
Stay safe over there and I'll do the same.

Hi,
I don't have instructions but see how it looks like on my bike and you will figure it out. There should be two metal pieces in the kit that you have to bolt on the right crash bar before the installation on the bike.
Hope this helps.
Safe ride
Iv
Forgot to upload a picture of the full installation. If you need more info just tell me.

Thanks IvG - very helpful.
Turns out I was missing the short metal piece (was caught up in the packing) - doh !
Should be able to install now without any further problems.
Thanks again
Chris

Installed my Fehling crash bar today. It is easy enough, and no special tools needed. What the paltry instructions don't tell you (covering the left side only) is this: on the right, if you install the top and middle latch first, there is no way to insert screws and nuts, and tighten them up on the bottom latch. Between the latch, the exhaust, and a sensor installed nearby, there is no way to get it all in place. Need to take the crash bar off again, start a 2nd time with the bottom latch. With the bar free to move and rotate around the frame, and if your glove size is 6 or 7, you can manage to get the lower bracket in place. Decent instructions would have saved half an hour and some cuts.

If you ever do it yourself: remember to install one side completely before starting the other. This way the engine doesn't sag down, and it's easy to reinsert all screws.

I am going to re-post this picture of the back of my 2013 CB on the right with SW-Motech Crash Bars, and the 2017 EX in the Middle. I have posted before how, in my opinion (and the photos) how much better the Crash Bars from China protect our bikes. They cost about 1/2 as much as the SW-Motech, and almost look as good.(fit)
My only complaint with the ones from China (bought off Ebay), is that they do not provide an acorn nut to cover their bolt. Sold I bought a few from Home Depot.
Blow them up and take a look.

This is an excellent viewpoint to show just how close the SW-Motech Bars are to the engine, and how small of an impact would be needed to smash them right into the Engine casing!

I bought OEM Crash bars for the DLX. Just not on yet, because I wanted chrome ones to go better with the chrome features of the DLX.

SW Motech bars are SOLID steel. Ebay imitations are mostly hollow tubing. Guess which will do better in a crash?

My bike went down at 65 mph and the SWM bars took all force of impact and the abrasion from asphalt. I was able to ride the bike home. Shaved 3/4' of metal from the mangled bars, it was sliding for a while. I posted pictures few years ago, it was nasty.

+ 1 on the SW Motech bars. A deer ran into me and the bike slid about 65 feet.
The bar folded as designed and wore about 1/3 through without touching the case.

Worked great. The mar on the case was from being dropped in my driveway the first week I owned it.
