Guhl Motors and ECU Re-Map for DLX / EX with Idle Issues
#1
I'm waiting to have my 2014 EX ECU Re-Mapped by my Honda Dealer, in an attempt to cure the idle problem that a few of us with 2014 DLX/EX models seem to be having.

I'd delayed doing it as I've had my ECU Flashed by Guhl Motors and the general consensus seems to be that the Dealer Re-Map software would over write the work Guhl Motors had done to the ECU.

I spoke with Don at Guhl Motors last week and he was incredibly helpful.
He's very interested to see what differences the new map from Honda has over the old one. I'm going to have the Honda re-map done and test to see if the limiters have been put back in place. If they have I'm going to send the ECU back to Don and he's going to go thru the new map and note the modifications. He can then update his re-flash with the mods Honda have made for the models with an issue.

I'll keep you posted on what we find out....

Thanks Beardy! I am very anxiously waiting to see how this works for you. The service department where I bought this bike told me there are "no service bulletins or recall notices" available, and they never heard of any idle issues with this bike (I am not surprised because of the limited number of these bikes around). If when you get yours done, can you please provide me with the details - for example the bulletin notice, or the map number, or anything that I can share with my dealer to help get my problem fixed? Thank you.

Very interested to hear about the results. If there is anything different in the remap, Honda might be trying to fix something without making it known.

Ok Fellas, It's booked in for Tues 22nd Nov. I'll try to provoke it on the way home from the dealers and the following couple of days... I was told it's a re-map, it's official and there are other people on the forum who've had it done already and I think it was successful. In Europe and Aisa tho, not seen any from N.America, so maybe it'll come in due course.

Could someone please post a picture of your invoice or something similar? My deal also has no idea about the remap

I second this - please Shy I talked to the service department at my dealer and they had no information available on this issue.

Hello Beardy - do you have an update for us? Thank you.

Hey all, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been working away, with no comms.... I got your PM Dave, thanks for the reminder! I though I'd already posted about what occurred but obv. didn't.
The Honda dealer tried to install the new ecu map but the computer said that my bike already had the latest software installed. Which is odd as it's the first time it's been in for this.
The mechanics aren't able to force the computer to load the new map. If the computer says it's up to date then that's the end of the process.

The dealer has bounced the problem back to Honda and is waiting for a reply. Either a mistake at their end, not adding a new version number, Or an install problem, or a prob with my Ecu. It has been flashed by Guhl, so maybe an issue there.

Sorry I couldn't bring you good news. I'm a bit miffed as it's wasted my time and it's still got the issue. As soon as I here anything back from Honda I'll let you know.
Best
Kev

I am pretty sure Don Guhl can reflash it back to stock, of course it means shipping and all that. Did you check with him about the update which resolves the idle issue? He might know the workaround. What he would do is download the updated map containing the fix, see what Honda did, and incorporate that into future performance flashes. His software should be able to totally clear your ECU, unlike what your dealer is using, which is basically idiot-proof. BMW does it the same way, they actually connect to the Internet and the map is downloaded from a server.

Right, that would be the normal path but as we see, it won't work. I believe you will need to send the ECU back to Don as it is, he should be able to wipe it clean and reload the original OEM program/map.

Then you take the bike back to your dealer and their software should recognize it as outdated, and allow an update.

After that you ship it back to Don, and the rest is as you indicated.

I believe that is how it would work but Mr. Guhl can tell you with a higher degree of confidence.
Of course it is always possible your dealer is NOT using a network connection and is using instead a standalone laptop-based flash software, in which case their equipment is out of date. Because if Don used the original software/flash as a basis, his work generally overwrites certain sections and leaves the rest alone. Thus the version number should be the same. Keep this thread updated when you can as it would be interesting to see how all this turns out.
