Weak Idle / Stumbling in Gear
#1
2013 CB1100. I'm at 12,000 miles and the last two afternoons after a 20 minute ride I clutch in, the idle is weak and right above 500 rpms with stumbling upwards to 750 rpms. stumbling. If I put in neutral it idles fine at ~ 1200 rpms. Put back in gear with clutch held in it is a low stumbly idle. Problem does not show itself in neutral. I will change the plugs this week, but any other ideas of what this could be?

linuxology, anything in [url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=8120]this post that helps? Or is your problem different?

If I'm reading this correctly, it sounds like the idle is low when in gear with the clutch pulled in, then immediately returns to normal when you shift into neutral?

If that is the case, it sounds like your clutch is dragging. When you pull in the lever, the clutch is not disengaging completely. The most common cause of this is either a lack of fluid in the hydraulic clutch mechanism, or an air bubble in the system.

I'd check the clutch fluid level. If it's OK, then my next step would be to bleed the system to remove any air.

Flyn,

It is possible to adjust our levers in too much so that the clutch doesn't disengage completely? (No, I'm not going to go try it Smile )

The idle is low and it does not sound quite right like it's missing. I just started it when it cooled down and is not exhibiting the symptoms. I have never adjusted the clutch lever, and not sure it does anything with adjustment being hydraulic. Clutch fluid level is fine.

Adjusting the lever lets you move it out or in closer to the grip. I just wondered if it could be moved in too much and thus not disengage completely. I moved both levers in one notch. Obviously not your problem.

When you are having the problem, does the MIL light?

Unfortunately, you may be having the idle problem that no one has a solid answer too yet.

Anybody notice the CB1100 idles slightly faster when cold? Mine always does so and I believe that's factory normal. Wonder if malfunctioning air temp or engine temp sensors have something to do with our infamous demonically possessed random idle quirk that has no rhyme or pattern.
Mine sometimes runs at a higher rpm when cold AND in gear than in nuetral. Once warm, back to normal. And it only does it in cold weather.

The faster idling when cold is certainly normal. I think it runs at 1500 rpm for a bit before falling to 1100 rpm when it's warm.

So maybe the oddball high idle issue is a malfunctioning sensor causing the idle to stay up even when bike is warm? Where is the temperature sensor and has anybody tried replacing it?

ive had this happen on a REALLY hot day in slow traffic bike has even stalled once but only when the bike is really hot.
