Tire suggestions for spoked rims
#1
Looking at purchasing a '17 EX and researching tire options. Other than the stock Bridgestones, what are y'all running on spoked rims?

Hi Noah. I think the stockers on the US model are Dunlop Sportmax Touring D205s. At the moment, that seems to be it for choices in the OEM sizes, tho we 2017ex owners are hoping more options will appear by the time we need to replace the factory rubber.

Not really any options available in tube type tires other than the OEM Dunlops.

I know that these are "tubless" tires, but they are available in the size of the stock Dunlops.

I have not used these tires yet, but plan to install a set with tubes when my stock Dunlops are worn out.

Some guys say never to use tubeless tires with tubes in them, but a lot of guys do just that. Moto Guzzi even puts tubes in tubeless tires on the spoke rims for V7 Specials from the factory.

There is a thread on the forum here of a member who has ridden his CB1100 EX over 100,000 miles. He has a link in that thread to his maintenance records and I think he runs Metslers.

This is from the RevZilla tire FAQ page concerning tubes in tubeless rims...

(you have to scroll down to get to this quote on their FAQ page)
https://www.revzilla.com/common-tread/mo...-101-guide

" What if I use a tubeless tire with a tube in it?

This is generally fine to do. Note that the addition of a tube adds friction — and thus heat — into a tire. Most sources agree that if adding a tube, it's prudent to assume the tire has "stepped" down one load and speed step."

Yeah, I just got back from my local triumph dealer; (I can walk there; my Honda dealer is a bit of a drive). Triumph is putting tubeless tires on the Bobber from the factory as well. Good to know. I'll check that thread too; thanks.

Having a dealer that close is awesome. Are you also looking at the Bonneville Speedmaster as a possible next bike?

Nah; it's a toss up between the CB and a T120. Not looking for a cruiser configuration at the moment. And yeah, having the dealer that close is great for everything other than my wallet and sanity. Smile

The Metzeller seems to be the only brand in the USA w/the
proper size in a radial tire.
110/80-ZR18 & 140/70-ZR18

My CB (2017) is in the shop as I type for new tires and oil change in preparation for a 1100 mile trip.

The local Honda shop done business with 45+ years had trouble finding tires for the CB. The guy who works the tires is knowledgeable, and been a parts guy for 35 years. He looked through all his resources and advised the OEM tire was a Dunlop, and if I wanted stay with it he'd have to go through Honda, as the tires not listed in any of his books. That option would be $$$. He believes Dunlop got the contract from Honda to special make the tire for the CB, because it doesn't work on anything else.

He advised Metzller made a sport touring tire, correct size, but were designed for tubeless, but would work with a tube.

I went with the Metzllers, I should have the CB back in a day or 2, and I'll give the report on how they're working. The original Dunlops went out after 8k miles.

I fitted tubeless Metzeler Z8 Interact in the original sizing to my spoked wheels. My wheels have had the Outex tubeless conversion done a couple of years ago. The Metzelers are a brilliant tyre in terms of grip for what they are - sport touring. Also they 'feel' quite neutral in corners being a round profile but I can't comment on durability as they've only done about 2,000km and showing no signs of wear yet.
