Funny Ear Plugs story
#1
Riding today I was wearing my gel ear plugs. First off while geared up and walking to the bike I could feel my footsteps thud through my body. That was weird. About 2 hours into the ride I stopped to eat 1/2 turkey sandwich I had packed in my tank bag and drink a little water. Just pulled over into a shady spot on the edge of a gas station, sat on my seat sideways, flipped my modular shield up and started eating. Chewing and swallowing is an extraordinarily weird sound when your ears are plugged. An hour later I went to pass a slow moving car, signaled I was pulling out, pulled forward, tapped the horn button twice to let the driver know I was passing and ..rats my horn quit working. Finished my pass signaled and pulled back in. Got to thinking about the horn. Bent over right above the tank and hit the horn button again .. greeted with real muted meep meep. It was working, just couldn't hear it with the ear plugs in. I'd say the ear plugs were working too well lol. Rolleyes

Same here, when riding today, I tried to scare some horses by honking = no sound??
Tested horns at home, without earplugs, lovely and loud CB sound Smile

If my earplugs are secured too deeply, I get the same effect, unless they are "NoNoise" or similar knock-offs. Otherwise, I will open them up a bit for those same safety considerations. Of course, I find there is a fine line between "too deep" and "too shallow" (lets in too much wind noise) with many earplugs.

As with many things in life, everybody has their own unique hearing requirements.

if you are alone on the street then it does not matter if you isolate so strong

There are specal plugs which filter only certain frequencies, then you can still hear all the important noises or talk to someone

Hmmm.....interesting. Maybe working too well ferret or have you already lost some hearing and that's compounded by ear plugs.
I wouldn't want my hearing to be blocked to that degree. I use the E.A.R plugs and can still hear quite well.

It's cool how sound is conducted through your skeleton. You don't notice it when your ears are open, but with tight plugs (or just in a really quiet space) you hear everything that touches your body really clearly. Chewing and swallowing are especially frightening sounds when they come from inside your head!
In the late 70s/early 80s they made a radio for runners/skaters/nerds called the "Bone Phone." It was a thing that you wore around your neck that had speakers that pressed against your clavicles and the sound traveled through your bones to the ears. It worked pretty well but was a bit clunky. I have wondered how it would have worked on a bike. Lately, the same idea is being used with headphones so you can hear what's going on around you while still hearing music. It works really well.
Science! Clap

Like those new “bone conduction” sunglasses that play music through the temple portion of the glasses without anything actually in your ear.

But funny to hear your own swallow flipper work to full effect while your earplugs are in.

Even worse if they stop pumping and flowing.
