Recently picked up a 2014 CB 1100, liking it a lot.
On occasion a negative symbol will appear when I'm down shifting, either when stopped or rolling to a stop. Manual says I'm down shifting improperly.
Any input?

The switch assembly is indicating that you are not in gear.
May want to clean the switch area, check switch connection and fasteners.
Otherwise, pretend it is a Harley and shift like you mean it.

Thanks, I can do that.

The (-) appears when the shift drum isn't rotated completely with each gear change. This can be caused by not shifting carefully or it could be caused by external reason, like if the shift lever is physically binding on the pivot bolt.
More likely, the shift lever is not adjusted to your foot to allow a normal, comfortable range of motion. Sometimes wearing different shoes changes your footpeg-to-shift lever angle. The hand and foot control angles can make a big difference in your comfort and to function.

Shift technique is more than just oofing it up and stomping it down. When I first started riding, lo these many moons ago, I'd miss a lot of shifts, up and down, until a more experienced rider told me about matching RPM. To most riders, this is nothing new, but to some, it's a grain of knowledge to be stored and used. When I adjusted my technique, missed shifts went away, (except when I'm lazy) and finding neutral became easy. Got to get your right wrist, your left hand, and your left foot to work together to shift smoothly.

Apologies for trying to resurrect a dead post lol. Mine says 5th anytime I'm in a gear, but still shows blank for neutral, any ideas?
