I am surprised at how many of you guys are wearing out the rear pads before the front. I replaced my front pads at 22,838 miles and they were worn nearly to the bottom of the wear slots. I replaced my read pads at 24,660 miles; they still had about 25% of the original material left, but I was changing the rear tire so it made it easier to change the pads at the same time. I always try to time my pad replacement with a tire change. I have never worn rear pads out before font pads on any of my bikes.

Having said that, my experience on the CB1100 is not long, have only ridden it for about 4000km so far, but on my last 5 bikes (dirt bike included) the front pads wore off way before the rear pads. Sold my Tiger 1050 with 65000km, still running original rear pads.

For me, what I have been taught in two different defensive driving courses (and my experience confirms this theory), the most efficient way to brake is:
-start with the rear brake: this helps keeping the attitude of the bike (so you will have less front dive-in) due to the anti-lift geometry of the rear suspension
-Then (shortly after) apply front brake as required, ideally increasing rear pressure proportionally to the front brake pressure application.
For normal, calm braking, it's good habit. For hard, emergency braking, it can save your life.
Another thing is braking distance, and this is an easy test anyone can do, with ABS, braking as hard as possible from a given point:
-only rear: longest braking distance
-only front: shorter braking distance
-both front and rear: SHORTEST braking distance. Always.
So, using front and rear is the safest. Using the rear slightly before the front, will give you better control of the bike (less dive-in). Using the proper techniques during easy driving will make you to be ready if/when an emergency occurs.
So I use both, but I get more wear on the front (as most of the braking effort goes where you have the most of the grip during braking due to the load transfer, which is the front end).

Funny, I noticed how much stronger the rear brakes are on the new bikes, compared to the older ones. I have never been a front brake only rider and have read that usage by more than one rider. I was taught years ago, to use both brakes at the same time, but to depend a little more on the front than rear, and never use only the rear brake. But I did change all the pads on the 2013 CB when I bought it with 6700 miles on it because they looked way too thin. When I installed the new ones, I also changed out all the brake fluids and even cleaned the reservoirs well. I think the bike had been braked too hard and the pads bit the dust too soon. I also learned years ago to slow down sooner and engine brake more because back in the late 60's and 70's, drum brakes stunk! I read now that "brake pads are cheaper than engine rebuilds", but I still engine brake, but never the 'throw one over the handlebars' method. Engines can take the engine breaking without breaking.

Besides being an mostly and only rear brake user, I use whenever possible only my gashand and downshifting to control the slowdown process without stressing the engine. I once read, don't know if it's true, that ralley riders do the same. They control all acceleration and deceleration only wih the gashand. But I don't ride ralleys.

In my opinion, deceleration still work best with brakes, brake pad are much more cheaper than clutch packs and chain set. Using both brakes work best. But trail braking into corner work best with more rear, cause front brake always cause the bike to straighten up. Anyway, CB rear brake is one of the good grip compare other bike. The whole front and back combo is one of the best grip brakes I known. I am not sure why my rear used up faster than my front on CB, but could be because of the dynamic of the bike causing me to use more of the rear to stabilize the bike. All other sportier/ lighter bike I have will wear the front brake much faster.

Brake pads are for sure cheaper than drive chain or engine parts. But it totally depends on how you will use the engine for deceleration. In a smooth or harsh way. I prefer the first. No need to worry about worn out parts because of this kind of slowing down. You have to downshift anyway to stop. So why not use the engine to slow down? If no stop is intended, you can just shut the gas, the engine's torque is fine for reving up from low revs even in the fith gear. No downshifts necessary for light acceleration afterwards. Maybe in the 6th too, never have ridden a CB with a 6 gear box.

Maybe somebody should inform the manufacturers that they no longer need to install dual front disc brakes because of "modern" approaches. Think of the money they would save, and the reduced weight!

Honda CB500 already started with big front single disc. But I still very much prefer dual front disc. Looks more balance and meaner on a bike. And I believe the "modern approaches" are more of a preference. Most rider still prefer more front than rear. The method that work best is the one that stop fastest and safest based on situation.
