Christmas blinking lights for safety reasons
#1
I am thinking installing Christmas lights on my bike to get attention from absent mind car drivers, especially big SUVs at night. It is weird, I think all of you think so. Few yrs ago, a driver almost hit me on bike from behind on stop sign at night (true, ) then I almost hit someone of black skin in black cloths, and black shoes with black hat ... who crossed the street with no light in moonless black night (true again)

Christmas blinking light on my bike from top to rear to light up the street to declare here grannie is, what ya think?

What about permanently driving with a safety vest?

I would be afraid it would draw attention to someone with kids and make them get even closer then they normally wouldHuh

I'm not sure if you mean actual Christmas lights, or just some serious auxiliary lighting. But either way, my feeling on over doing it with lighting, or sound in the form of extra loud exhausts, may have unintended consequences. Target fixation is not only a problem for bikers. If you attract too much of a focus from typical automobile drivers, you might get fixated upon...and the results of that are never good. Probably not a scientific base for my theory, but I'd avoid riding around like a Christmas tree on two wheels.

This is a good point. If you ask a cop, one of the most dangerous places they can be is pulled over on the side of the road with all of their lights flashing. While it seems contrary to common sense, people regularly get fixated and slam into highly visible emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

It got so bad here in AZ that they made a law that you have to move over 1 lane or slow down 10 mph when passing an emergency vehicle at the side of the road.

side step from my org posting - target fixation is real, you look at a cow you hit the cow on your bike as I was told. My sis was tired and asked her husband to drive and parked on emergency lane on highway to switch, then a truck totaled her car, hit and run. They were so close to be hurt badly.

10mph less than the speed limit, or 10mph with respect to the speed you were already going? Big Grin

I thought this was a standard rule of the road?? Move over or slow down when passing the police/emergency vehicles with their lights on. Maybe I learned that from my 18 years in Arizona?!

Either way common sense I think should prevail.
