2014 vs. 2013 Gear Ratios (Especially 6th)
#71
My CB's got 5 gears and a neutral in-between, does that count as 6?
A bit like that clear space in my head, I try not to fill it with crap.

He also owes me an apology for crediting my material to an innocent bystander! I said (typed) those comments and I stand by them.

One thing Chris hasn't answered is whether he's ridden the CB1100 or indeed ANY of the bikes in question which he claims to have encyclopaedic knowledge of. I'd wager he hasn't and is just an 'Internet specialist' in things mechanical...Dodgy

I wouldn't buy the Triumph Bonneville over a CB for the following reasons;

::Made in Thailand not Britain
:: Only two cyclinders
::Has become a bit of a cliche
::I don't dig the lines much (tank shape particularly)

The same for the W800

::Is a clone of something else, not from this stable..ahem.
::Only has two cyclinders
::Looks a little too tacky with all the plasticky looking chrome
::To me it's like watching a tribute band, not so much the Rolling Stones, more 'Gathers No Moss'.

I share Chris's love of squid (calamari) but not of these bikes. I looked at each, so they're not abhorrent to me, but the CB1100 trounced them as a package. As far as the whole sixth gear issue goes, 200 rom does not, in my book warrant the term 'overdrive'. It's just a six speed box with the rations spaced to accommodate the extra. Five works just fine for me, and due to the sheep littered idyllic village I live in (Birmingham) it's perfect for what i need. Fourth is my favourite gear on this bike, so I'll keep mine until they release a four speed version!

If cruising at optimum low revs and efficiency were an issue, I'd have bought something else, perhaps a NX750?

When Chris has answered my question, as to which of these bikes he's ridden and for how long, then we can move this debate forward.

From all the latest trolling behaviour I suspect he's off in the W800 forum telling them how inferior their bikes are to the mighty CB or Triumph! Sleepy

Geez folks, if I try real hard to remember it's actually riding motorcylces that makes me feel good. Doesn't matter whether it has 5 speeds or 6, doesn't matter if it has bridgestones or dunlops, doesn't matter if it has a mobil or penrite oil, just get on and twist the throttle. Good to have a bit of banter and fun but IMO this conversation has wandered of track ... maybe it's the length of the northern hemisphere winter but seems like way too much time to analyse specifications.

Well said. There's a saying about arguing on the Internet, some thing about the Special Olympics.. I won't say it though Blush

Holy smokes, that will pay me for going to bed early one night in the last month.

Deep breath everyone!

Lets remember, that if someone like to tweak, and we have several that like to tweak us once in awhile, that if you respond negatively, the tweaker wins in their mind. They thrive on the confrontation. They enjoy stirring the pot and see what bubbles up to the surface. Lets not play the game.

With regards to the 200 rpms difference between say 60 mph in 5 th on the 13 and 60 mph in 6 th on the 14 ....... with the tweaking Honda has done with the 2014 transmission ratios there should be a 400 rpm swing from a given speed in 5 th and the same speed in 6 th on the 14s so the overdrive will be more apparent.

To put it another way, the 14s should be running 200 rpms HIGHER at any given speed in the first 5 gears than the 13's, so the 14s might feel a bit peppier thru the first 5 gears than the 13s.

Im not saying the 6 th gear on the 14s is going to be an omg overdrive like maybe some were expecting, but it will be noticeable if you are riding a 14 down the road at 60 or 70 mph in 5 th and snick it into 6 th.

Either way, not enough difference to fight over.
