Good discussion, this. Ridem's choice is clear and he's happy with it, although not being an American I can't quite understand how "the basic life of love and trust" sits comfortably with a right to bear arms that "...trumps all laws".
Red Mist is on the money about the ease with which Internet companies gather information about us. There's a book called "Big Data" that discusses this and shows that there are benefits in aggregating large amounts of data and analyzing it. However, it also points to some of the risks and Edward Snowden's revaluations have shown the enthusiasm with which western governments have gone about tapping into that data—ostensibly for our own good. While "the innocent have nothing to fear" is another aphorism beloved of intrusive states, history tells us that sooner or later governments or some of their officials will misuse or abuse their power. I'm not obsessive about privacy, but I also want to exercise some choice about what information I share and with whom. Those of you with a similar view should contemplate Red Mist's advice.

Cormanus. Our rights to bear arms was put in there so that our government could never take over. That's why we have the right to have guns ! But now our government is buying up all the ammo. Lol. But it's the truth. As kids we all had 22 rifles for hunting, and just to shoot. Now you your lucky if you can find a box of 22 if you do they cost lots and your limited on how many you can buy. But our government is buying up all the 22 bullets ! Why !? !?

Many of us up here in Canada are .22 pistol and rifle competition target shooters. Winchester and CCI are the favourite brands, but try and find some these days!! We were wondering why the supply has all but dried up

I am so torn on this privacy subject. On one hand I am a friendly trusting guy. I realize that most anyone wanting to find out where I live could easily find that info out. I found out my High School best friends address, home phone, new wife's name, their kids names, that his parents had died etc all on the internet in about an hour. I hadn't had contact with him in 41 years. Called him up the other day and we reconnected. That was nice. He still rides as well.(in High School in 1965 we used to terrorize the neighborhoods...first on a Honda C110 50cc sport ( him) and me on an Aermacchi 50. Then we both got Honda 160s. Then I got a 305, then a 350 and he bought a 59 Harley Sportster. When he went away to college I traded him my 350 for his Harley Sportster. Last time I saw him we were in our early 20s. He was living in Tennessee with his high school sweetheart wife and 2 kids, and I rode down to see him on my RD 350 and was dating the young lass that would become Mrs Ferret who Just celebrated 40 years of marriage with me last week. See? Was sharing that info dangerous to me?
I won't do facebook. When you watch a show like NCIS or Criminal minds where they have computer gurus sitting there that can pull up nearly anything on anybody, you wonder just how much power the government has. Too much I fear in some instances. Guess I am just going to live my life, let you guys know too much about me, and try not to worry too much. I ride motorcycles. That's dangerous enough to worry about.

Thanks Ridem. He's living in Dallas, North Carolina now with wife number 5 and her 8 year old daughter. Can't imagine.. two of my grandkids are older than that. l get down to North Carolina about every other year. Next year I may actually get to see him and give him a hug (or handshake..his choice) after all these years.

Redmist: you have been a member lots longer than me. But take a chill pill. Most of us so called ole true bikers don't want to hear all the stats about the web. Like I know people that can Well never mind I want even go there. I'm a very calm person by nature. But please start your own thread about about web saftey and let people post on it. I started this thread as the title states! Read the title again. Now your high jacking , which to me is the same as hacking my thread! So by rights you can start your own thread about web safety and then see how many of us ole bikers post in it. This is one great forum and I love it. As most of us do ! Today is ferrets birthday and he was just telling me about a old friend that he found and was excited. His friend did not steal his wallet. Well not as of yet lol. I'm i upset at you? Heck no
