If you are not aware, these are air cooled motors. They make noises, and can't hide them like a liquid cooled motor. Why? Because there is no sound damping. Liquid cooled motors have water jackets that mask a lot of these noises. I would like to point out, that this CB1100 has so many moving parts. Way more than it's 70's predecessor. It's not uncommon for an air cooled motor to make noises. Some more distinct than others. Unless you start seeing metal shavings in an abundance in your motor oil, I would NOT worry about it. But, if you want to take it to a dealer and have them tell you different, by all means do so for peace of mind. Based on my personal research, and no evidence of a catastrophic failure, and an email posted by another poster from Honda... I believe this noise to be normal operation.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, if I had to take an educated guess it's something to do with the cam chain tentioner.

Honestly, I feel like so many people are LOOKING for an issue on this bike. Just RIDE it, and take some Ritalin for that A.D.D. before your ride.

These engines are noisy, and when I got mine I tried all three octane ratings of gas in it and it made no difference, whatsoever. Oh wait, I forgot to mention oil.

I love oil threads.
I use synthetic oil too. 10W-40 even.

Maybe try some diesel. Probably see a difference then!

Lol my brother did that once on his Bonneville. He was at a BP station that has the 3 grades and diesel at the same pump and grabbed the wrong handle. He called me in a panic asking what to do. I told him remove the tank, pour it out, refill with fresh gas and carry some spare plugs for awhile, but it was all good, he didn't need the plugs. I was afraid the diesel residue would foul them, but it didn't.

I almost did that once.
I wasn't paying attention and had lifted off the diesel hose by mistake.
I then tried to make the gas pump operate and it wouldn't. Finally, I realized I had the wrong hose in my hand.

I read every oil thread..The collective wisdom is 5w30 energy conserving oil is a no no, a 15w50 or 20w50 use in your harley. I use shell rotella t6 syn in my jeep, pickup, generator, atv, lawn tractor and since it is MA jaso I use it in my CB1100. Its easy and inexpensive..If in doubt just use Honda oil..I have never experienced or heard of an oil related engine failure..Just ride it..

Diesel
My wife and I have a diesel car. On a Saturday at the end of a long road trip we pulled into a Shell service station at a place called Warwick and discovered they didn't sell diesel. So we went a long the road to the Caltex station, figured the aisle with diesel and pulled into it. I got out and filled the car (which was very empty indeed) and we drove off.
Got about three blocks and the car started coughing and spluttering.
"You didn't fill the car with petrol?" my wife asked. Very mildly, I may add.
"Of course not."
The car rolled to a stop beside the road.
"Are you sure you didn't fill the tank with petrol?"
"Yes," I replied, but got out of the car and popped the filler cover.
Oh, that smell. A whole tank full of the highest octane premium petrol.
We enjoyed the 80km drive to Toowoomba, sitting up there proudly in the front of a truck with the car on the back. We enjoyed the 300+ km hire car trip home and I felt like a complete fool.
Luckily, the car sustained no damage. They drained the fuel tank, flushed the system and I drove back a couple of days later and picked it up.
I've a theory that I was lucky. Because the tank was really empty and I filled it with petrol, it took almost no time to bring the engine to a stop. I've always wondered whether, if there had been more diesel in there, the engine would have taken longer to stop and sustained more damage.
Anyway, if you want to read a much cleverer account of a similar event, try [url=http://www.smh.com.au/comment/diesel-dilemma-a-breakout-hit-20150724-gigy54]here.

You're a lucky man, Cormanus. Darling would have taken control immediately. No, "I have control", just the death stare. Then, I would surmise, the truck takes the car, Darling takes a stretched limo (fully equipped with all creature comforts). Me? I would ride Shanks' pony. It's only 380kms of penance - easy.
Cheers

I can't credit that, Pterodactyl. I'm sure you'd be accommodated in the stretch limo with a soothing balm on your brow and a glass of Bundy to help ease your remorse.
Of course, the only time my good lady did something like that she realised while she was filling the car that it was petrol going in. The beast was never started.
We men are frail creatures.
