How Accurate?

I don't worry much about fuel consumption on trips or elsewhere. Averagely my 2013 CB takes round 4,6l over a distance of 100km. I have this in mind. Summer less, winter slightly more also depending on my riding style. When the tank indicator starts blinking, I know that there are still some more kilometers to ride, because Honda concepted the reserve on the safe side, means it's pretty large.

After 250km I start to fill the tank. Sometimes after 300km or even later. Sometimes the refill depends on the fuel price which tends to change rapidly during the day.... Don't miss the missing gadget for average fuel consumption on the first CB release.

Well, I'll try another, probably not completely relevant, post to this topic.

I am not thrilled with the predictions that the 2017 EX computer gives me about range. Maybe its mpg predictions are good; I don't know, since I don't look at those. I calculate mpg every tank and now have a pretty good idea of what I'll see, which is over 50 mpg every tank (so far, so good, at about 1300 miles).

OK, so the factory service manual lists tank capacity at 4.44 gallons/16.8 liters, which is identical to my owner's manual numbers. FSM says reserve (I think that's supposed to mean when the last brick of the fuel gauge starts blinking) is 0.98 gallon/3.7 liter. Owner's manual differs here and says "about" 0.9 gallon/3.6 liter.

Today I ran the bike until the last brick started blinking, at which time it indicated 46 miles left. At the gas station, this had diminished to 27 miles. I had run 187 miles and used 3.558 gallons (I always fill up to the same point, namely the bottom of the filler neck, the piece that has one big hole and two small ones, and put the bike on the center stand), giving 52.6 mpg. At 52.6 mpg, that means I should have 0.51 gallons left (27 miles shown as remaining). 0.51 plus 3.558 equals 4.07 gallons. Not 4.44?

Oh, the 46 miles remaining when it first started blinking would be 0.87 gallons at 52.6 mpg, which is pretty darn close to 0.9 gallons, the owner's manual number.

I guess it doesn't matter . . . unless I am some distance away from a gas station and think that I have a third of a gallon more than I really do . . . No, I don't make a habit of that, but if I could fill up at 200 miles rather than 170, that would be better.

Gotta strap that one-gallon gas can to the back and find out for certain . . .

the gallons left to empty is calculated over usage of the last 1/4 mile I have been told. I have actually seen my miles left to empty go UP when back off and just cruising 30 mph because the computer says well at this rate of usage, you should be able to go this far. Whereas at a normal 55-60 mph, the comuter says well at this rate of usage you should only be able to go THIS far.

I would not use miles to empty as iron clad, because it depends on how you ride. Go slow, use less gas, more miles to empty. Make sense?

In honor of this thread I spent today in mickey Mode, trying to see what sort of fuel mileage I could manage on my '17 EX. Cruising along at an indicated 72-74 mph on the freeway, my trip computer said I was doing 49 mpg. Once I exited the freeway and topped off the tank, I rode most of the rest of the day somewhat close to the posted speed limits, in large part due to Sunday boating traffic holding me up around the lake. My second full tank said I averaged 52.8 mpg. The trip meter said 178 miles, and the final fuel bar had just started blinking, yet I was only able to add 3.16 gallons of fuel, which works out to 56.3 mpg.

I don't know what to make of only being able to add 3.16 gallons after the fuel light started blinking. Regardless, I definitely eclipsed 50 mpg, and easily would have been able to do well over 200 miles on that tank.

Pulled in to get gas with last bar blinking

It was showing 39 miles remaining



Toggled to B and it said I had gone 207.3 miles on this tank



toggled again it said I averaged 55.8 mpg on this tank



toggled again and it said I had used 3.7 gals gas



filled it up as normal to the bottom of the neck



turned around and checked the pump and I had put in 3.69 gallons of gas



With calculator 207.3 miles divided by 3.69 gals = 56.1 mpg (computer said 55.8)
Fuel pump said I filled up with 3.69 gallons of gas (computer said I used 3.7)

That's pretty darn accurate if you ask me

(still had approx .9 gallon of gas in the tank I am assuming for a 4.6 gallon tank or about 49 miles at 55 mpg... computer said 39 miles left)

When I get to the last bar I think "gas up or push very soon" cause if you are going up hill you need to divide that number you had by pie and going downhill you need to subtract pie, apple pie. Then get ready to push very very soon.
So, pretty amazing what they did in the seventies, they had a reserve petcock that they turned when they suddenly lost power and prayed that was the problem. Sometimes it was.

I guess if you open up your tank and can see your reflection in the gas then it's still all good. Right?

"Reserve petcock in the seventies" failed me 28 miles from the nearest gas station forty years ago. Two hitchhikes and three hours later, I was on my way again.

Look's like the honda trip computer is giving " Noroomtomove's First Law of Motion and Fuel Consumption" a run into obsolescence.

I've spent time carrying a fuel can during the rally down under I should write about it one day.
