rear shocks question
#1
Hello fellow CB1100 team,
M in SC recently posted about replacing his CB1100's rear shocks at 10K miles.  He mentioned IKON if I recall.  What all shock brands are available for a 2014 CB1100?  when mine wear out, what other brands other than OEM are there to consider?  Is there a consensus on which replacement one works best?
thanks,
tdbru

I installed Ikons Dial-a-Ride on my CB1100 back in 2016. I can’t really give you an objective comparison with the Ikons overall performance over the OEMs. I can say the Ikons prevents rear wheel hoop when I ride on a twisty mountain road with cracked and heaving pavement. With the OEMs, I actually felt the rear wheel jump sideways on a curve.
For normal everyday riding, I can’t describe any improvement.
Keep in mind that I am older rider that does not ride as aggressively or push the CB towards it’s limits. Also, I should have done a ride just before the Ikons installation for a comparison run.
Hopefully my post will get others to comment whether it’s about Ikons, Ohlins, etc.
In my stable:
2014 Honda CB1100 Standard
1967 Honda CB77 Superhawk

I replaced the rear shocks on my 2014 dlx with Ohlins shocks. This improved the overall ride and handling, but not remarkably. They're expensive, and only you can determine if these high-end shocks are worth the price.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm looking into suspension upgrades. when I set the preload enough to keep the front end from diving excessively under braking, the ride is like the proverbial lumber wagon. I know it can get better than that.

I put Progressive Suspension rear shocks on a Triumph Speedmaster, a Suzuki VS1400 Intruder and have them on my Suzuki GS1100. They were much better than OEM on all 3 bikes. The problem is, they do not make them for the CB1100. Wish they did, I would have put them on all 3 of my CB1100s. The price was very affordable, much less than Hondas OEM shocks.
Here is a pix with Black progressive shocks. Look great too!
When I bought this GS1100E, it had a $100 pair of crap shocks you see on ebay. The Proggressive ride was so much better, words cannot convey the difference. Bumps get absorbed to where you hardly notice them.

Their website does not list our bike as one of the Hondas they fit. I put Heavy duty ones on the GS1100E because of its sheer size and weight.

Progressive had shifted their focus to the Jeep and Harley Davidson markets, ignoring low-volume models, but they do offer a comprehensive listing of their 12 series and 412 series.  Our bikes take about a 14.25", and there are several in the list.  Near the bottom of page 7 is the 412-4058B/C, which comes with 90/130 black or chrome springs (B/C).  They have no damping adjustments, and the damping is the same for a 250 pound XL185 as for a 550 pound CB1100.
