five miles, but 90% of the time on a klr because I can't stand the idea of leaving the cb in the rain all day.

... or having birds and geese crap on it.
Even if you cover it, you still have to deal with the cover, securing it from wind gusts, clean it, lug it around, fold and unfold it. Totally understand muling the KLR.

And I do put a cover on the KLR, secure it with bungees to keep the winds from turning it into a sail, and upon removal it's soaking wet, so shake it off like a wet dog does and pack it away...but it keeps most of the water off the bike and out of the electrical areas...going on 11 years commuting on 650 so it must be working ok.
But if I had longer commute of say 15 miles and on hiway...no thanks, not with the Oregon rains.

I don't mind leaving my CB in the rain or whatever, because i know that the bike is extremely tough. not as bulletproof as a KLR, but extremely reliable. Rain isn'ta big deal, really, it's *leaving* the bike wet that's a problem. I always make sure i wipe it down completely once the rain is done.
Also, these days, there's less and less actual chrome surfaces on my CB, and now my steel headers are gone, so cleanup just gets easier and easier.
all that aside, i still garage it every day when i get home, and shelter it whenever possible.

30 miles each way, but it's mostly freeway so I don't bother to take the CB.

I have never covered any of my bikes while parked in blazing heat or torrential downpours. The [decent] bikes are engineered to take it. I never had a problem starting a soaking wet cycle, even those [Japanese] models from the 1970's.
I never wipe down my ride, unless a bird had its way with it - especially on the saddle and handle grips.
