Engine turns over but no star after sitting few days
#1
So I let it sit couple days after putting fresh gas in it and putting a battery tender on. Today with it being below 20 degrees outside I tried to start it to no avail. After couple tries all I could smell is faint odor of gas out of exhaust pipe. Anyone got suggestions before I start taking spark plugs out and checking possible causes of this? Engine turns over but it feels like there’s no spark or maybe timing off.

So it has no issues cranking/ turning over, right? It just doesn't fire up?

And it's in neutral, with the side stand down OR on the center stand with the sidestand up, right?

And you checked that the kill switch is in the run position right?

And you didn't crack the throttle trying to get it to start right?

Correct. Can I try to push start it or will it damage anything?
I did try to crank throttle on third try to be honest

Yes it can be push started but it shouldn't have to be.

After you got gas, it ran fine?

What is voltage while cranking?

If under 10.5, it may be an issue for the electronics.

Easy (other than ambient temp!) to pull a spark plug (9/16 or 14 mm deep socket) and check for spark on one of the outer spark plugs.

As far as the kill switch goes, checkout Flynrider’s experience with his:

I’ll get a voltage meter and see if battery holds charge. It maybe an original battery from 2014 in there

After I filled it up with premium it started and ran fine day after. Now two days later I’m having this issue

If the battery is still up, I would try starting again. Turn on key, let instrument needles sweep, keep your hand off throttle, press starter button, crank no more than 2 or 3 seconds. If it doesn't start after 2 or 3 attempts, we need to start digging into it a bit more.

At 0 F, battery capacity drops to about 50%
So, at 20 F battery capacity is probably 62% of normal.

If a cell is failing, I am surprised that it will even crank.

How much was it ridden before parked?
Did battery tender reach full charge indication?

Battery tender shows full charge. I guess I’ll have to wait for this weekend when it’s supposed to be in the 40s. It fired up fine before but who knows I’ll check manufacture date on the battery tomorrow.
