The most recent Consumer Reports magazine contains a one page article that reports on data collected by State Farm Insurance. The data analyzed ran from July 2017 until June 2018. Our lovely West Virginia ranked as the highest risk state for accidents invoking deer. 1 in 47 people (in WV) filled a claim, during the covered period, that involved deer. Virginia was in the high risk category with 1 in 99 State Farm customers filling such claims. I’m posting this because of the upcoming rally.
The attached picture is most likely copy righted but I doubt CR would care about me using it here.

Yep lots deer in W Va and that was a consideration in rally ride start and end times, although the stupid things can cause havoc at any time of the day in reality. I see a ton of deer between 10am and 2 pm

When I was out on my last day ride, I thought to myself I had not seen any critters cross in front of me this year. I blamed it on two long winters. But it wasn't long before a doe changed that. Good thing she was a good piece away.

Lots of deer here too. It's hard to not go anywhere and not see one or more.
Our winters of late have been relatively mild and snow free so they survive very well.
Just last week I was riding through a heavily populated area just on the edge of town and there stood a doe and two fawns as I came around a mild curve in the street.
It was a residential city street so I was only going less than 30 mph. The doe wasn't in any hurry to get off the street, but did walk into the back yard of a resident and the fawns followed.
This was nowhere near a forest and it was very surprising how or why she was in that residential area and all the streets and traffic hazards she had to negotiate to get where I saw her.

My only deer strike was while driving a Plymouth Valiant in Espanola, New Mexico. The local sheriff stopped by to make sure I was ok, and when I said that I didn't want to keep the deer, he strapped it to the hood of his cruiser and drove off.
I'm currently only riding the blacktop jungle on my daily commutes, but my last job routed me through a fairly wild twisty canyon road. I was always on the lookout for animals, and on only one occasion, clipped the butt of a coyote who darted out in front of me. He seemed ok, but I watched in slow motion as the front half of my Bonneville's fender sheared off and smacked my left hand as it went up and over. Ouch. Made it to work, then started pricing the replacement parts. More ouch. I ended up riding back and picking up all of the hardware pieces I could find along the road.

A deer on Long Island? If you hit it, would it just flip you off and saunter back into the woods?

My driveway a couple of days ago. There are three that hang out in my front yard eating dropped apples and pears.

Most likely there would be an ‘incident’ where the deer left the gun and kept the canoli...
