A Ride to Jacksonville

Not an especially exciting destination but my dealer, Cycles of Jacksonville had called to say my Pilot Road 3 tires were in so I headed out early this morning with the intention of taking coastal US-17 and avoiding the traffic rush on I-95. The weather was lovely at about 60F and clear skies. US-17 had very light traffic and I only had to use a short section of I-295.





While waiting for my tires the I had plenty of time to browse the showroom. Cycles of Jacksonville carries Triumph, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi and there were a lot of bikes in stock but one really got my attention. The shop owner has done his own take on a CB1100. Beautifully done in the Gulf Oil racing team colors worn by Ford GT's and later, Porsche 917's for International endurance racing in the late 60's and early 70's.







Skies turned gray and the wind picked up to about 20mph on the way home-a real contrast to the morning. Stopped on the Florida side of the draw bridge that spans the St Mary's River for a few photos then had a burger at Steffen's Diner in Kingsland, GA.









The Satilla River and only 12 more miles to home. I think I'm going to like the new tires.

They're not easy to rundown I'll tell ya, especially when one's afoot.

Steve, how many miles did you get out of the orig tires?

Mileage was only 5K (I did not get to ride as much as I'd planned this past six months). The front had at least another 5K left but the rear had gotten flat spotted in the center and could be felt when starting into a turn. I could have easily gone another 3K on the rear.

Nice pics. Looks like a really nice ride.

I like my PR3's a lot. I have found no matter how hard I try, I can't ride the rear PR3 all the way to the edge like I did the stock Dunlop's. Always a little chicken strip showing.

I think you'll enjoy the new tires. Great pics. I thought about painting (or wrapping) my CBR250r in Gulf Racing colors, but I traded it in on the CB1100. Nice look on our bike, too, but I would have gone with #20.

Here are the Gulf Porsche 917's on pit lane in 1970. I had a paddock pass for the 24 Hours of Daytona that year and was able to wander the pits and garages. The primary drivers then were Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez. If memory rightly serves, Rodriguez was killed at the German round that same year and Siffert suffered crash injuries that ended his racing career. A paddock pass was $20 then, an unbelievable bargain.
