A few years ago my wife and I drove to Oregon to visit the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville. I have flown into Oregon before but never driven there.

At the first gas stop after we were passed the state line I started to gas up our Suburban. The fuel attendant ran over and stopped me. I thought he would call the cops! I had no idea that the law prohibits gassing up your own vehicle!

Does that law also apply to motorcycles? I would be very reluctant to allow anyone else to gas up my bike.

They have always just run my card and let me fill the bike. They have never even tried to fill the bike.

Those bee encounters are not fun. They always try to outrun bikes, so you hit their stinger when you catch up to them!

So I impaled myself on the bee stinger?!?! Now that was silly of me.Confused

The same thing happened to me when I was visiting for a job interview about 20 years ago. I was at the coast and the rental car needed a fill, so I stopped and began to fill and a guy comes running out telling me to stop, asking what the heck I was I doing. I had no idea. I hate that law. Whenever I'm in Washington I always fill my cars whether they need it or not just because it makes me feel manly.Dodgy

When I first started riding motorcycles in OR, back in 2003, a few gas attendants would ask me if I wanted them to fill, but nobody has done that for a long time. If they're not busy they tend to watch me fill I guess to see if I'm doing it "right"? What they do ask is if I want a paper towel to wipe off any gas I spill.

Nice report and great photos pdedse — thanks for sharing!

Lately I've had a few different attendants tell me that it's fine by them if motorcyclists pull up to the pump and do everything themselves so that's what I've been doing. Just as with the others, I've never had an attendant try to fill my tank.

Wait a minute - it is illegal to fill your own gas tank in Oregon?

What kind of ridiculous law is that?

Yes, it's true. You can fill your motorcycle but they have to hand you the handle. What's funny is sometimes when I tell them I want premium they take the handle and dump the leftover gas that might be in the handle/hose on the ground lol. I think New Jersey has a similar law (at least they used to).

It's not often that a question actually contains the answer within, lol.

It's just part of the price to live in this particular paradise.

That was amusing ("highlighting the dangers of spraying it in the air like Zoolander") but it doesn't answer the question "Why?"

[url=http://blog.oregonlive.com/commuting/2012/02/why_cant_oregonians_pump_their.html]WHY?

Excerpts from article:
>>...Back in 1951, when Oregon first mandated that only trained station workers could put "Class 1 flammable liquids" into cars, the state mainly didn't want people accidentally blowing things up....

...the statute contains 17 justifications for the self-serve ban. They run the gamut from protecting small children left in cars to preventing spills to keeping older drivers from "unreasonable discomfort."

"The justification that's cited most often is that the law creates jobs," said Oregon State University economist Patrick Emerson. <<

Not to be missed is the end of the article:

"Live here long enough, and you'll find your own reasons to buy into what once seemed crazy."
