While I did not camp for more than 15 years, some friends told me, I had to do camping on my ride across the USA, as that is a unique experience in the wild.

What do ya think? That would mean, I had to carry a tent, sleeping bag and a camping mat...

Personally I would not camp , too much hassle . You are better of with motels or even better stay with CB 1100 owners !

If you enjoy the camping experience, go for it. It will just take a bit more planning.
You shouldn't plan on just setting up on the side of the road or in any old field, as property owners often don't allow it and you could find yourself in trouble with the law. That said, I have friends who have stopped each night in a town and asked for permission to camp in a field or yard. and they were seldom turned away. You just have to have an outgoing, friendly personality. And a dog helps, too.
State and National Park campgrounds are a good way to go and not expensive. You just have to plan ahead and possibly get reservations. Different ones have different amenities. Many have bathhouses and restrooms and such. Some do not. You can Google, for example, "state park camping, Utah" or "camping in National Parks, Utah" and get started there. The internet makes everything easier :-)
That said, I'll bet you can travel a good way on your trip while being hosted by folks right here on the forum. It's an upright community and I wouldn't hesitate to reach out. If I ever get up the gumption to ride across this country, that's what I'm going to doThumbs Up
And you won't need a rifle Dodgy
Good luck with the planning!!
Bob

I am an extremist: Throw a sleeping bag on the ground or stay in a hotel.
Not much of an issue in the southwest USA, as rain is not as prevalent.

If camping is an occasional option, then a bag with a light tarp, which can double as a ground cover and throw over the bag in light rain. OTOH a two person (more room for gear) camping tent does not take up much more room than a tarp.

Unbelievable, what members of this forum can do! Gentlemen, I take my hat off to you.

Haystack offered me his CB 1100 for the whole ride (I asked him, if it's okay to mention that here). Unfortunately that is in South Dakota, too far away off my planned route and I couldn't take that anyway.

I decided to fly my CBF1000F to LA and ride it to New York, from where it will be shipped back home. So I can prepare and check my bike for the ride at home and can just start after arrival. 6 weeks sounds like a long time, but it will just fade away. Life is too short to spend time in preparation, when the 6 weeks have already started.

Looking forward to see some of you guys in person!
