Sissybar Followup

This is a follow-up to the thread Buffalohead posted about the sissybar on his friend Mike’s CB1100 with sidecar.

Mike mounted a Jardine short backrest onto a Honda rear carrier. I wanted a lower profile setup so I went with the Jardine mini backrest.

The mini backrest wasn’t a perfect fit, so I made a pair of makeshift mounting brackets using 0.2” thick aluminum plates.

I started by drilling a couple of holes in each side of the carrier. Since the carrier sides are angled, I made some wedges from an old cutting board that my wife will never miss, and I placed these wedges on either side so the mounting bolts would be in line with the sissybar

Two ¼” x 1.5” stainless steel bracket mounting bolts go through the wedges and the drilled holes in the carrier. The bolts in turn hold 2 aluminum plates in place. The backrest then mounts to the plates.

More than a few folks would consider it sacrilege to cob together plastic and aluminum bits to make a mounting bracket and attach them to an otherwise nice motorcycle. But I was getting tired of not finding a good sissybar solution. This will do until I find something better. It’s very solid and will make my wife much more comfortable. Plus now I can goose it with the wife on the bike and not get yelled at (as much).

Pretty darn nice! Is there a spacer or rubber mount between the Rear Carrier and the OEM bracket, where the bolts attach?

You can see a white piece on the right side of the carrier in the 2nd and 3rd picture. That's one of 4 wedges fabricated from a 1/2" thick cutting board. One is on either side of each of the rear carrier's "side plates" to square things off.

We just came back from a ride and the wife loved it. But I still got a whack upside the helmet when I grabbed a fist full of throttle.

I'm surprised the mini didn't have the same measurements as the short backrest. Mike's fit perfectly without spacers. But, the whole thing is sort of a fluke anyway. Perhaps they all vary a little bit when bent at the factory. I'm glad it turned out nice. It looks great! The only reason Mike wanted the taller one is because his wife is used to a taller one from his last bike and she's about 5' 12" tall!

Is there any chance of getting some closeups of the Mike's attachment to this sissy bar? I have the same size sissy bar as him and would like to see how/where it's connected. If it's too much of a hassle, don't worry about it, you've helped plenty already!

He's out of town until next week but I'll have him shoot some pics when he gets back. I did mention CB4ME's problem and he told me he actually had to squeeze his backrest in slightly for it to fit. He liked the tight fit.

Then the mini isn't as wide. It will drop down through the rack. It's pretty close but no cigar.

I'm also interested in close up pictures from Mike. I consider my current setup as temporary.

Your bike looks great! I'm a new owner and checking out accessory options, can you brief me about the windshield on your bike and its pros and cons?

There are some great windscreen threads on this forum. I poured over all the great pictures and descriptions before making a choice. Very informative and entertaining stuff.

I have a Puig Plus. Puig windscreens are made in Spain. Google Puig and check out their offerings.

The Puig Plus is very light weight, thin (3 mm), flexible and strong. If you purchase one, it comes with a lot of hardware to mount on various bikes. On the CB1100, you'll only need the 2 mounting brackets, 4 small bolts and 4 plastic washers. Best mounting position is between headlight and headlight mounting brackets.

The Plus offers some wind protection, primarily to the chest area. The area behind it is calm at lower speeds. There is some spillover to the chest at higher speeds but not a full blast of air.

The top of windscreen will juggle a little when riding over bumps. That's not an indication of a loose mount (it's rock solid) but more the nature of it's thin cross section and flexibility.

Check out the other windscreen threads before making a decision. I'll be doing so as we enter colder weather and more wind protection is needed.
