GPS anyone ? Thoughts ? preferences?

I have ordered a new Tom Tom Rider 2 for my KTM? Don't if I'll use it on CB? I think on a CB it's mandatory you use a paper map to find way home!!
I picked that unit because it has a "curvey road" setting that supposedly send you on the curviest route to destination? Unfortunately it may be spring before I can offer a review of how it works? They are between $349-$399.

I also chose the Rider 2 for my Honda NT. I plan on getting another cable and mount to be able to also use it on the CB. Found it brand new on eBay for $299.

Ok, so this may have been asked and answered I this thread or elsewhere, but do GPS devices exist that allow the user to pre-program a turn-by-turn route of their choice? I'm not interested in "avoid highways" or "curvy roads" features. Rather, I want the device to guide me on the route I plotted out the night before. Maybe they all do this now, but the last time I looked into it, I couldn't find a device that did this.

Yes ES I have read others talk about it, you plot a turn by turn course on your computer and then down load it to your GPS. I have no idea how any of this magic works, or which units you can do it with, but over on the ST board someone could answer right quick. Those boys are technology nuts over there and far travelers.

This is just the way, I usually use my Garmin Zumo 660 at my motorcycle.

I plan the route at home at my PC, using the software `basecamp', which comes from Garmin with the device. Beside the maps, delivered by Garmin, you can also use Openstreetmap. I also use topological maps, to get an idea, where it's interesting to go.

Then I use the USB connection, to download the route to my device very easily. Also, I can upload the tracks, which I recorded with my device during the tour, and see on my computer maps, where I was in reality.

During the ride I use the device mainly as a pointing device to follow my predefined route, not for calculating any routes. Very seldom I just press the `bring me home' button.

When we do tours in a group, approx. 6 out of 10 have a Garmin and we share the same route. So nobody gets lost during the tour and we just reunion at certain waypoints, we also have planned into the tour. No need for waiting at every junction or traffic light for the followers.

Beside that, you can download routes from other riders from the internet, like http://www.gpsies.com and use them on your device, or just for getting an idea where to go in an area, where you haven't been before.

TY, Django and Ferret. I will look into this. I've tried Garmins app for iPhone/iPad and have tried using Google maps. Garmin's apps don't seem to have the upload/download capability discussed and Google maps has proved cumbersome for me at this point. I may not switch from paper and pen, but knowing that I could upload my own route to a device is intriguing.

ES I use the TomTom app on my iPhone. It operates without needing a cell signal and allows you to plot a route and get turn by turn instructions. It has limitations—it seems to allow only 5, maybe 6, waypoints; and I have yet to discover how to plot the route on the computer and download it. That said, I've found it acceptable. It's also cheaper than buying a standalone GPS and generally, I'm already carrying it.

Great info Django! Nice to have all the tech savvy CB1100 riders we can find.
Could be that many older folks ride CB1100's and are less techy than some other forums....sorry, but true.

I bought a Garmin Zumo 450 used on ebay 3-4 years ago and wasn't disappointed.
