I haven't decided, yet, but I agree with your notion that extending the sliders could create a situation in which they shear off rather than slide. However, my original thoughts were concerned more with creating a de facto highway peg that would have the added benefit of possibly protecting the engine covers in the event of a drop. So, it could be possible that I would take the risk of the sliders breaking off IF the offset to that risk was having a comfy place for my feet.

At the moment, I'm leaning toward engine guards like yours, MG, and maybe adding a folding highway peg to them.

Right now, however, I'm saving my money for a gear indicator.

I am in the same situation as you are, EmptySea. I want the sliders and a place to stretch my legs as well.

Since they are not super expensive I will probably get them.

What I think I might like to do: add highway pegs to my bike that are strong enough to protect my bike in the event of a drop OR add sliders that are long enough and positioned in a manner in which they could serve as highway pegs.

What I don't want to do: fabricate mounting plate or brackets. Add crash bars.

Any thoughts, links, or pics on this subject?

I hesitate to mention this because I can't remember the source, however it was in one of the motorcycle magazines. This guy said sliders often cause more damage than would have occurred without them on the street. The article sounded pretty convincing. I just thought I'd mention it.

I made my own brackets real easy and added Kuryakyn Large ISO-Pegs. Two holes for the mounting bolts that are already on the bike and one for the pegs. I painted them black and make sure you put heavy lock tight on the bolts or the pegs will loosen.

Yes, I have Kury off-set arms and pegs mounted to the OEM engine guards. Caveat: there is limited area to mount the arms. I've just about worn out the bolts trying to get the pegs "just right". If you haven't bought the OEMs yet, consider the Motech guards from Twisted Throttle or possibly the Chinese knock-offs on ebay in black or chrome. Once I hear back from the Chinese as to the diameter, I'll decide if I want to buy theirs or the Motechs. The Motechs are pricey, IMO. Motechs, I am told, measure 1 1/32" diameter which should accomodate 1" clamps. That is the diameter of the Honda bars and my Kury arms fit very tightly.
