Instead of whistle, how about the sound of mountain lion snarl.

If you can't wait to hear the mighty sound of real mountain lion growl go to 1:39

I knew a guy that had a salvage yard near Yellowstone Park. When I asked him about deer whistles back in the 90s, he took me on a tour of his yard. About every other car that had impacted a deer or moose had a little deer whistle on the bumper.

I hit my first deer almost a year ago and I haven't been tempted to add one to my bike.

My father had them on his truck when he lived out in the boonies where the deer population was higher than the human. On Nantucket I will only see them at night, but in VA I saw them in the daytime as well. Ask Kenny, deer, deer, deer, deer (that was down by 4paws)

Saw a bear at the end of my driveway early April! First animal my dog didn't chase. Gotta keep your head on a swivel and give yourself room to react, that only gives you a second or maybe two to react safely.

Flyn, I wouldn't add a deer to your bike. It's more likely to attract other deer than to scare them off. Tongue

I'm not sure...perhaps antlers like this would serve more protection than a whistle? Wink

OK, I agree that the deer whistles may not work, but I bought an elephant whistle years ago for my car and I haven't seen an elephant yet! Tongue

...and these folks wish they had installed a Baboon Whistle before their trip to African Lion Safari!

Might consider buying a few rabbit foot lucky charms(not so lucky for Bugs Bunny, though!) along with those deer whistles... along with some four leaf clovers..."have not hit a deer so far"... those whistles MUST be doing their job... I've heard some tell me... that kind of testimonial usually does not pass muster in a reputable experiment... not riding at night seems like a better strategy... though early dawn & late twilight has obviously higher risk due to their activity levels then...

We live on the Maryland eastern shore, we have deer everywhere. Deer get used to traffic sounds. So if deer constantly hear deer whistles they soon ignore them.

The one sound that gets their attention is the human voice, so if your bike has a radio and you are going through "deer country" tune it to talk radio. I can't swear it works but it appears to make deer freeze when I spot them close to the road.

Of course as soon as I spot a deer I slow way down, because they ARE very unpredictable. Usually there is more than one. Unfortunately the CB 1100 doesn't have a radio. However maybe your second bike has one, certainly can't hurt to tune in to talk radio in deer areas.

Yes, that is the one option I really miss. Was nearly a deal-breaker. ROFL

Only thing I can say about this, having committed odocide (that would be the act of dispatching Odocoileus hemionus) myself, is that these things jump right out in front of ya. Deer don't usually stand right out in the open so we can take note of them; usually they remain concealed since predators like mountain lions and coyotes are sharing the terrain with them. You don't see them until they are moving. The doe I struck was standing in the center of a four-lane highway (PCH, N. California) and when it was blinded by my headlights, leaped directly into the path of my motorcycle which was traveling at 70 mph. It was an XL600R, the left fork leg caught her neck and her body slammed into my left leg. I expected it to be broken but somehow it was just banged up. Somehow I didn't crash.

It was laying in the road, dead as a doornail. I couldn't leave it there because some other motorist might chance along and strike the carcass, so I dragged the 90-odd pounds over to the embankment and pitched it down into the darkness. Best I could do under the circumstances. I may have said a few words over it, can't remember.

At any rate the best policy is to avoid these areas when deer are most active, and slow way down.

BTW, did see a black bear last year, and was riding the CB1100 at the time. Ran across the road in front of me.

Something about red Honda motorcycles, maybe.
